C200D: Power steering motor rotation angle sensor fault, steering gear internal failure (Ford)
EPAS motor rotation angle sensor fault
Severity: Inspect soon
NHTSA found that loss of the steering motor position signal on these Ford steering gears shuts off power steering assist. Steering still works but needs much more effort, especially at low speed, which raises crash risk. Get it diagnosed soon, and do not drive if assist is gone.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Steering becomes heavy or a Power Steering Assist Fault or Steering Assist Fault message appears. Ford's recall says loss of assist needs more steering effort at low speed and raises crash risk. Pull over safely and have the car inspected or towed.
C200D in short
On Fords, C200D means the power steering module lost a reliable signal from the steering motor's position sensor inside the electric steering gear. Power steering assist often shuts off, making steering heavy. Dealers usually replace the steering gear. Check for open recalls, and if steering turns heavy, pull over safely.
Ford's electric power assisted steering (EPAS) uses an electric motor on the steering rack. The power steering control module needs to know the motor's exact position to drive it. C200D means that rotation angle signal is faulty; with the :49 suffix, dealers describe it as an internal failure of the steering gear.
NHTSA's investigation PE14030 into 2010–2012 Fusion, Milan and MKZ and 2011–2013 Taurus, Flex, MKS and MKT found intermittent electrical connections inside the steering gear motor that cause loss of the motor position sensor signal and loss of assist. It lists C200D-49 among the codes that lead to steering gear replacement. Ford recall 15V340000 followed for many of those vehicles; its summary does not list individual codes.
Owners of 2010–2016 Fusions, 2011–2016 Explorers and 2014–2015 Tauruses report sudden loss of assist with C200D, often with U3000, and dealers replacing the steering gear.
Pick your make
C200D is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.
Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Steering gear motor position sensor or internal connection failure
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- NHTSA's investigation names C200D-49 among the codes that lead to steering gear replacement, and dealer readouts for Fusions and Explorers describe C200D as an internal steering gear or motor rotation angle sensor fault.
- What would change this
- Rises if C200D returns after clearing, or comes with U3000 or loss of assist. Falls if a recall software update or wiring repair clears it for good.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Have codes read from the power steering control module, and write down every code including the suffix after the colon (for example C200D:49).
IfC200D is stored, especially with :49 or with U3000
It meansAn internal steering gear fault is likely.
Go to step 2 Points to: Steering gear motor position sensor or internal connection failure
Step 2: Enter the VIN on the NHTSA recall lookup or ask a Ford dealer whether recall 15V340000 or another steering recall applies. The recall summary does not list codes, so a dealer must confirm.
IfA recall is open
It meansHave the dealer carry it out; it covers checking the power steering module and replacing the gear if codes are found.
IfNo open recall
It meansThe repair is not covered by that recall; get a diagnosis.
Step 3: Have a technician run Ford's power steering diagnosis with a Ford-capable scan tool, check the steering gear connectors and module power, then confirm whether the steering gear needs replacing.
Warning:Steering is a safety system. Do not take apart the steering rack or column yourself, and do not drive if steering assist is lost.
IfThe pinpoint test shows an internal steering gear failure
It meansThe steering gear assembly is replaced.
Points to: Steering gear motor position sensor or internal connection failure
Symptoms
- Power Steering Assist Fault or Steering Assist Fault message
- Steering suddenly heavy, especially at low speed Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Service AdvanceTrac message
- Assist comes back after restarting, then fails again

C200D questions
Is C200D covered by a recall?
Possibly. Ford recall 15V340000 covers loss of steering assist on many 2011–2013 Fusion, Taurus, Flex and Lincoln models, but its summary does not list codes. Check your VIN and ask a dealer.
Can I drive with C200D?
Steering still works without assist but needs much more effort, especially when parking. If assist is gone, do not drive; pull over safely and have it towed or inspected.
