C1277: Steering wheel angle sensor circuit failure (Ford, Lincoln)
Steering wheel angle 1 and 2 circuit failure
Severity: Inspect soon
Ford bulletins show this code turning on the AdvanceTrac or traction control light, so stability control may not work. On the 2010–2012 Fusion, owners report it with loss of power steering assist. Get it diagnosed soon.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Steering suddenly becomes heavy or a Power Steering Assist Fault or Service Power Steering Now message appears. Loss of steering assist raises crash risk, especially at low speed. Pull over safely and have the car inspected before driving on.
C1277 in short
On Fords and Lincolns, C1277 means a control module found both steering wheel angle signals missing or invalid. Stability control (AdvanceTrac) can switch off, and on 2010–2012 Fusions it often comes with loss of power steering assist. Get it diagnosed soon; if steering turns heavy, pull over safely.
Stability control needs to know where the steering wheel is pointing so it can compare that with how the car is actually turning. The steering angle sensor sends two signals so the module can cross-check them. C1277 means both were invalid or missing.
On the 2003 and 2007–2008 Expedition and Navigator, Ford bulletins 17001 and 08-20-8 cover the AdvanceTrac or traction control light with C1277 or C1278 stored in the stability control module. We have only read the bulletin summaries.
On the 2010–2012 Fusion and Mercury Milan, owners report C1277 together with C1963 when the power steering assist fails and a Power Steering Assist Fault or Service AdvanceTrac message appears. Dealers replaced the power steering module and steering gear. Ford recall 15V340000 covers sudden loss of steering assist on 2011–2012 Fusions and related models, but its summary does not name this code.

Most likely causes
Cause 1: Electric power steering gear or module fault (2010–2012 Fusion)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Fusion owners report C1277 with C1963 and loss of steering assist, and dealer notes show the power steering module and steering gear being replaced.
- What would change this
- Rises if steering assist has been lost or a Power Steering Assist Fault message appeared, or C200D or U3000 is stored. Falls on vehicles without electric power steering.
Cause 2: Steering angle sensor or its wiring (Expedition, Navigator)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford bulletins for the Expedition and Navigator describe C1277 as a steering wheel angle sensor circuit and signal failure.
- What would change this
- Rises on those models, or if the light came on after steering column work. Falls if the sensor signals read normally on a scan tool.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Have codes read from the ABS/stability control module and the power steering module, and write down every code.
IfC200D, U3000 or C1963 is stored too, or steering assist has been lost
It meansThe electric power steering gear or its module is the likely source.
Go to step 2 Points to: Electric power steering gear or module fault (2010–2012 Fusion)
IfOnly C1277 (and maybe C1278) is stored
It meansThe steering angle sensor circuit is the likely source.
Go to step 3 Points to: Steering angle sensor or its wiring (Expedition, Navigator)
Step 2: Enter the VIN on the NHTSA recall lookup or ask a Ford dealer whether recall 15V340000 applies and has been done. The recall summary does not name this code, so it may or may not be related.
IfThe recall is open on the vehicle
It meansHave the dealer carry it out; it covers loss of steering assist.
IfNo open recall
It meansProceed with diagnosis.
Step 3: Have a technician check the steering angle sensor signals, wiring and the power steering module with a Ford-capable scan tool and service information, then clear and recheck.
Warning:Steering and stability control are safety systems. Do not take apart the steering column or rack yourself, and do not drive if steering assist is lost.
IfThe angle sensor or its wiring is at fault
It meansRepairing or replacing the sensor circuit is the fix.
