C0800: GM chassis control module voltage fault

GM C0800 StabiliTrak, steering or ABS code

C0800 in short

On Chevrolet vehicles, C0800 is a voltage-related fault in a chassis control module. Cruze owners see it with a Check StabiliTrak message and the radio cycling; a Volt bulletin links it to power steering service. If steering or brakes feel different or power cuts out, stop and have it inspected soon.

A Cruze owner was told the codes were "C0800, 07" and high voltage, after the dash display lost power and showed Check StabiliTrak. GM bulletin PI1398 covers a Cruze with the radio turning on and off, intermittent lights and C0800, B1325 or B1517.

GM bulletin PIC-5667 is titled service power steering C0800 on the 2011-2013 Volt, and a GMC Terrain owner had the steering gear replaced after C0800. A 2013 Regal, LaCrosse and Malibu bulletin says C0800 symptom 07 can show with wheel speed codes, which are to be diagnosed first.

Only summaries of bulletins were read.

Pick your make

C0800 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.

Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Voltage supply problem to the module

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
A Cruze owner was told high voltage, and the Cruze bulletin pairs C0800 with radio and lighting glitches that point at supply.
    What would change this
Rises if the battery or charging voltage is out of range or the radio cycles. Falls if voltage is steady.
  2. Cause 2: Wheel speed sensor codes setting it

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM PIC5837 says C0800 symptom 07 can show with C0035, C0040, C0045 or C0050 and to fix those first (2013 Regal, LaCrosse, Malibu).
    What would change this
Rises if wheel speed codes are stored. Falls if not.
How to test the brake system control module (abs module)
  3. Cause 3: Power steering control or steering gear (some models)

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
The Volt bulletin and a Terrain repair connect C0800 to power steering.
    What would change this
Rises if steering assist is lost. Falls if steering is normal.
How to test the power steering control module

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes from every module and note wheel speed, steering and low or high voltage codes, and check battery and charging voltage.

Symptoms

  • Check StabiliTrak message
  • Radio turning on and off
  • Steering assist lost or steering will not turn Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

C0800 questions

Is C0800 a brake code or a steering code?

On GM it shows up with StabiliTrak, steering and ABS lights, so it is not tied to one system.
