U0422: A module received implausible data from the body control module

Invalid data received from body control module

Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected

How serious U0422 is depends on which module stored it: GM says one case can be ignored, while other bulletins pair it with stability warnings, dead stop lamps or a no-start, so we have not set one class.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Get it checked soon if U0422 comes with a Service StabiliTrak or traction warning, rear stop lamps not working, gauges dropping out, or a no-start. GM bulletins link U0422 to these conditions.

U0422 in short

U0422 means a module received data from the body control module that did not make sense. Causes range from a harmless start-up glitch and software to wiring, a bad sensor feeding the body module, or the body module itself. Get it checked soon if it comes with stability warnings, dead brake lights or a no-start.

The body control module runs lights, locks, windows and other comfort features and passes their status, such as door switches, outside temperature and brake lamp state, to other modules. U0422 means one of those messages was missing a valid value or did not make sense.

Sometimes it means little. GM says the chassis module on several 2017-2018 models can set U0422 at start-up from bus traffic, and it can be ignored unless it is active or comes with body module codes U1534 or U1538.

Other times it points to a real problem: GM's 2016-2019 Malibu bulletin pairs U0422 with a Service StabiliTrak message and rear stop lamps not working, and GM truck bulletins pair it with gauges dropping out from wiring or connector faults.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: A harmless start-up timing glitch (some GM models)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM's 16-NA-407 says the chassis module on 2017-2018 Bolt EV, Equinox, LaCrosse, Terrain and XT5 can set U0422 at start-up and needs no service unless active or paired with U1534/U1538.
    What would change this
Rises if U0422 is history-only in the chassis module with no symptoms. Falls if it is active or other body codes are set.
  2. Cause 2: Body or other module software that needs an update

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Jeep's 08-053-14 body module update fixes a false U0422-00 on 2014 diesel Grand Cherokees, and KBB names programming issues as a cause.
    What would change this
Rises if a dealer finds an update for your VIN. Falls if all modules are current.
How to test the body control module (bcm)
  3. Cause 3: Network wiring, gateway connector or harness damage

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM PIT5586 has technicians repair the gateway module connector terminals, and PIT5713 traces U0422 among many codes to an engine harness shorting at the cylinder head on 2019-2020 Silverado and Sierra 1500s.
    What would change this
Rises if U0422 comes with many lost-communication codes. Falls if U0422 is the only code.
  4. Cause 4: A faulty sensor or switch feeding the body module

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford's 16-0054 pairs U0422 with ambient air temperature sensor codes P0073/P0074 on the 2014-2016 Transit Connect 2.5L, and KBB lists defective sensors as a cause.
    What would change this
Rises if sensor or switch codes are stored with U0422. Falls if no other codes are present.
  5. Cause 5: Faulty body control module

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
KBB and TaT name internal body module faults, but the bulletins we found point to other causes first.
    What would change this
Rises if the body module stores internal faults or several of its functions fail. Falls if wiring and software fixes clear it.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Scan all modules and note which module stored U0422, whether it is active or history, and every other code.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads all modules

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a bulletin or software update for U0422 in the module that stored it.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Have a shop check the body module power and grounds, the gateway connector and the network wiring.

    Use cautionTool: multimeter

Warning:Do not probe connectors with the ignition on, and avoid yellow airbag connectors. Let a shop do it if unsure.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Blind-spot, lane-keep or adaptive cruise features unavailable
  • A/C not working or a wrong outside temperature reading
  • Locks, windows, mirrors or lights not working properly
  • Service StabiliTrak or traction warning, or rear stop lamps not working Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Gauges dropping out or a no-start Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Write down every code from every module, including whether U0422 is active or history.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open bulletin or software update.

  3. Step 3: Check that your brake lights work; if they do not, get it inspected soon.

U0422 questions

Can I ignore U0422?

Only in narrow cases. GM says a history U0422 in the chassis module of some 2017-2018 models needs no service, but an active code or one with warnings needs diagnosis.

What is the difference between U0140 and U0422?

U0140 means a module stopped hearing the body module. U0422 means it hears it but rejected the data.
