C0455: Steering angle sensor fault (GM)

C0455 steering angle sensor / Service Stabilitrak

Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected

The sources describe the fault and lamps but not drivability; stability control and steering input sensing are safety-critical, so have it checked.

It gets more serious if:

  • Stop: The red brake warning lamp comes on, the pedal feels soft or low, or steering assist is lost along with the ABS lamp.

C0455 in short

On GM trucks and SUVs C0455 is a steering angle sensor fault that turns off Stabilitrak and traction control. GM's bulletin ties it to the sensor connector, and a bulletin also points to the steering wheel fit on the shaft. Steering and brakes usually work normally, but stability help is gone.

The stability system compares where you steer with how the vehicle is moving. C0455 means the steering angle sensor signal is missing or invalid, so the system switches off and shows Service Stabilitrak or Service Stability.

GM bulletin PI0639C (2007-2016) treats a Service Stabilitrak message with C0455 or C0710 as a steering angle sensor connector problem, fixed with dielectric grease and shim stock. PIT4225F says to make sure the steering wheel is properly installed on the shaft. Repairers in two complaints diagnosed a faulty sensor and one said the part was no longer available from GM or aftermarket in 2021.

This page speaks only for GM. Steering and stability are safety-critical, so there are no do-it-yourself steps.

Pick your make

C0455 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.

Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Steering angle sensor connector fault

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM PI0639C addresses C0455 or C0710 with a connector fix across 2007-2016 trucks and SUVs.
    What would change this
Rises if wiggling the connector changes the signal or the message clears temporarily. Falls if the connector is clean and tight.
  2. Cause 2: Steering angle sensor failed

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Two NHTSA complaints include a dealer or repairer naming the sensor, one with a direct test of the sensor.
    What would change this
Rises if the sensor reads no change while the wheel turns. Falls if the signal tracks wheel movement.
  3. Cause 3: Steering wheel not properly seated on the shaft

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
GM PIT4225F tells technicians to check the steering wheel installation, usually after the steering wheel or column has been worked on.
    What would change this
Rises after steering column or wheel work. Falls if the wheel was never removed.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Ask a shop to read the stability codes, check the steering angle sensor signal against wheel movement, and inspect its connector.

    Best left to a shop

Warning:Steering and stability faults are safety-critical; leave diagnosis and repair to a qualified shop. Disconnecting parts on the steering column can affect the airbag circuit.

Symptoms

  • Service Stabilitrak or Service Stability message
  • Traction control off and stability system disabled
  • Steering feels wrong or red brake lamp on Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.
