B1382: Passenger side airbag circuit resistance too high (Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia)
Passenger side airbag resistance too high
Severity: Inspect soon
High resistance in an airbag firing circuit means the computer cannot confirm that airbag, and Honda and Toyota owner's manuals say an airbag light needs prompt attention because the airbags may not work as designed.
B1382 in short
On Suzuki, Hyundai and Kia, B1382 means the airbag computer measured too much resistance in the passenger side (seat-mounted) airbag circuit. The airbag light comes on and that side airbag may not deploy. Bulletins and dealers often point to the connector under the passenger seat. Have it checked soon; never probe airbag wiring yourself.
The airbag computer measures the resistance of every airbag firing circuit each time the car starts. B1382 means the reading for the passenger side airbag, usually the one in the seat, is higher than it should be, so the airbag light comes on.
Suzuki's bulletin for the 2005–2006 Forenza and Reno pairs B1382 (passenger side) with B1378 (driver side). Kia's bulletins cover B1378/B1382 on the 2001–2005 Optima and, under warranty extension WTY025, on the 2017–2018 Sedona, where the front seat side airbag connector resistance is higher than normal. Hyundai owners report dealers resecuring the connector under the passenger seat.
High resistance usually comes from a poor connection, but only a technician with the service procedure should test or repair airbag circuits.
Pick your make
B1382 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.
Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Poor connection at the side airbag connector under the passenger seat
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Kia's WTY025 bulletin names higher-than-normal side airbag connector resistance, and Hyundai dealer readouts quoted in complaints describe resecuring or repairing the connector under the passenger seat.
- What would change this
- Rises if the light came on after the seat was moved or something was stowed under it. Falls if the connector checks good.
Cause 2: Other wiring or terminal fault in the side airbag circuit
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- GM service information lists corrosion and loose terminals as causes of high resistance in seat-mounted airbag circuits; this is general, not a finding for these makes.
- What would change this
- Rises if the seat connector checks good. Falls if a connector repair clears the code.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Have the airbag codes read with a scan tool that can talk to the airbag module, and note every code stored.
IfB1382 is stored, with or without B1378
It meansThe passenger side airbag circuit reads high resistance.
IfOther airbag codes are stored as well
It meansA technician should work through them in the order the service manual gives.
Step 2: Give your VIN to the dealer and ask whether a side airbag bulletin or warranty extension (such as Kia WTY025) covers the car.
IfCovered
It meansThe dealer repairs it under the bulletin.
IfNot covered
It meansThe circuit still needs a diagnosis.
Step 3: Have a dealer or trained technician run the airbag system diagnosis from the service manual.
Warning:Never probe airbag connectors or wiring with a test light or meter, and never unplug them yourself. Nissan warns that airbags and pretensioners can still deploy after the ignition is off, and that test equipment must not be used on airbag circuits unless the service manual calls for it. Leave this to a dealer or trained technician.
IfThe connector under the passenger seat is at fault
It meansThe connection is repaired or replaced.
Points to: Poor connection at the side airbag connector under the passenger seat
IfThe fault is elsewhere in the circuit
It meansThe technician repairs the wiring found at fault.
Points to: Other wiring or terminal fault in the side airbag circuit
Symptoms
- Airbag warning light stays on after the engine starts
How to fix
This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

B1382 questions
Can moving the passenger seat cause B1382?
It can disturb the connector under the seat, which bulletins and dealers often blame for B1382. Don't unplug or reseat it yourself; airbag connectors are dealer work.
