B1378: Driver side airbag circuit resistance too high (Suzuki, Kia)

Driver side airbag resistance too high

B1378 in short

On Suzuki and Kia, B1378 means the airbag computer measured too much resistance in the driver side (seat-mounted) airbag circuit. The airbag light comes on and that side airbag may not deploy. Bulletins and dealers point to connectors, and sometimes the seatback airbag. Have it checked soon; never probe airbag wiring yourself.

The airbag computer checks the resistance of each airbag firing circuit every time the car starts. B1378 means the driver side airbag circuit, the one in the seat on these models, reads higher than it should, so the airbag light comes on.

Suzuki's bulletin for the 2005–2006 Forenza and Reno pairs B1378 (driver side) with B1382 (passenger side). Kia covers the same pair on the 2001–2005 Optima and, under warranty extension WTY025, on the 2017–2018 Sedona, where front seat side airbag connector resistance is higher than normal; Kia also published a B1378 FAQ for the Optima.

B1378 also appears on Hyundai and Genesis vehicles, but we did not find enough sources to state its meaning there, so this page speaks for Suzuki and Kia.

Pick your make

B1378 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.

Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Poor connection in the side airbag circuit (seat or module connector)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Kia's WTY025 bulletin names higher-than-normal side airbag connector resistance, and a Suzuki dealer readout quoted in a complaint found a loose connector at the airbag module.
    What would change this
Rises if the light came on after seat work. Falls if the connectors check good.
  2. Cause 2: Driver seatback side airbag assembly

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
One Kia dealer readout quoted in a complaint recommended replacing the driver seatback for B1378; a single report, so it needs testing.
    What would change this
Rises if the connectors check good and the resistance is high at the airbag itself. Falls if a connector repair clears the code.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Have the airbag codes read with a scan tool that can talk to the airbag module, and note every code stored.

Low riskTool: scan tool with airbag (SRS) access

    • IfB1378 is stored, with or without B1382

It meansThe driver side airbag circuit reads high resistance.

      Go to step 2

    • IfOther airbag codes are stored as well

It meansA technician should work through them in the order the service manual gives.

      Go to step 3

  2. Step 2: Give your VIN to the dealer and ask whether a side airbag bulletin or warranty extension (such as Kia WTY025) covers the car.

    Low risk

    • IfCovered

It meansThe dealer repairs it under the bulletin.

      Go to step 3

    • IfNot covered

It meansThe circuit still needs a diagnosis.

      Go to step 3

  3. Step 3: Have a dealer or trained technician run the airbag system diagnosis from the service manual.

Best left to a shopTool: maker's diagnostic tool

Warning:Never probe airbag connectors or wiring with a test light or meter, and never unplug them yourself. Nissan warns that airbags and pretensioners can still deploy after the ignition is off, and that test equipment must not be used on airbag circuits unless the service manual calls for it. Leave this to a dealer or trained technician.

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light stays on after the engine starts

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.
