B0116: Side airbag firing circuit open (Toyota)

Side airbag squib circuit open, SRS light on

B0116 in short

On Toyota vehicles, B0116 means the airbag computer found an open circuit in a front seat side airbag firing circuit, and Toyota pairs it with B0111. The SRS light comes on and that airbag may not deploy. Toyota's fix on Siennas is an updated floor harness. Have it checked soon.

The airbag computer checks every firing circuit when the car starts. B0116 is stored when a front seat side airbag circuit reads open, so the SRS light comes on and that airbag may not fire.

Toyota issued bulletins for B0111 and/or B0116 on Siennas from 2004 to 2008 and 2006 to 2008 4Runners, with a new service part and an updated repair procedure for the floor harness and side airbag connections. Complaints show dealers also finding it on an Avalon, where the code cleared and came back.

Which seat the code points to is not consistent in the reports we read, so a technician should read the exact circuit.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Floor wiring harness or side airbag connector

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Toyota bulletins EL001-08 and T-SB-0252-08 give an updated repair or new service part for B0111/B0116 on Siennas, and a Sienna complaint quotes the harness and squib being replaced.
    What would change this
Rises on a 2004 to 2008 Sienna or a 2006 to 2008 4Runner. Falls if the connectors and harness check good.
  2. Cause 2: Intermittent connection that clears and returns

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
An Avalon owner says the code cleared after a connector check and the light returned.
    What would change this
Rises if the light comes and goes. Falls if it stays on constantly.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Have the airbag codes read with a scan tool that can talk to the airbag module, and note every code stored.

Low riskTool: scan tool with airbag (SRS) access

    • IfB0116 is stored, with or without B0111

It meansA front seat side airbag circuit reads open.

      Go to step 2

    • IfOther airbag codes are stored as well

It meansA technician should work through them in the order the service manual gives.

      Go to step 3

  2. Step 2: Give your VIN to the dealer and ask whether a service bulletin or warranty extension covers this code on your car.

    Low risk

    • IfA bulletin or extension applies

It meansThe dealer repairs it under the bulletin.

      Go to step 3

    • IfNothing applies

It meansThe circuit still needs a diagnosis.

      Go to step 3

  3. Step 3: Leave the diagnosis to a dealer or trained technician, who measures the circuit with the service manual procedure.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool with airbag access, manufacturer procedure

Warning:Airbag wiring can set off an airbag if it is probed, disconnected or powered the wrong way, and that can cause serious injury. Do not test or unplug airbag connectors yourself.
