B0111: Side airbag firing circuit open (Toyota, Lexus)

Side airbag squib circuit open

B0111 in short

On Toyota and Lexus vehicles, B0111 means the airbag computer found an open circuit in a front seat side airbag's firing circuit, often traced to the floor wiring harness or a connector. That side airbag may not deploy in a crash. Have a dealer check it soon, and never probe airbag wiring yourself.

Each side airbag in the front seats has a firing circuit called a squib circuit. The airbag computer checks it constantly, and if it sees the circuit open it stores B0111 (Toyota pairs it with B0116 for the other side airbag circuit) and turns on the SRS warning light.

Toyota and Lexus bulletins for the 2004–2009 Sienna, 2004–2008 RX, 2006–2008 4Runner and 2005–2009 GX 470 address this code with a repair manual supplement, new service parts, an updated wire harness, and a procedure to repair the floor harness and the side airbag squib circuit.

Toyota's owner's manual says the SRS light means a fault in the airbag, occupant classification or seat belt pretensioner systems, and to have the vehicle inspected right away. Side airbag circuits can fire if handled wrongly, so only a trained technician should work on them.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Floor wiring harness or side airbag circuit damage

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Toyota's Sienna bulletins give an updated repair procedure for B0111 and B0116 that repairs the floor harness and the side airbag squib circuit, and a Lexus GX 470 bulletin supplies an updated wire harness.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered Sienna or GX 470, or if the light comes and goes. Falls if the harness checks good.
  2. Cause 2: Side airbag circuit part covered by a new service part

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
Toyota bulletins for the Sienna and 4Runner announce a new service part for B0111 and B0116. The summaries do not say which part, so this ranks below the harness repair.
    What would change this
Rises if the dealer confirms your vehicle is covered by the new-part bulletin. Falls if a harness repair clears the code.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Have the airbag codes read with a scan tool that can talk to the airbag module, and note whether B0116 is stored too.

Low riskTool: scan tool with airbag (SRS) access

    • IfB0111 and/or B0116 is stored

It meansA side airbag firing circuit is open; check for bulletins on your model.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Give your VIN to a Toyota or Lexus dealer and ask which bulletin applies to B0111 on your model.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Have a trained technician follow the service manual's open squib circuit diagnosis.

Warning:Never probe airbag connectors or wiring with a test light or meter, and never unplug them yourself. Nissan warns that airbags and pretensioners can still deploy after the ignition is off, and that test equipment must not be used on airbag circuits unless the service manual calls for it. Leave this to a dealer or trained technician.

Symptoms

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

B0111 questions

Will the side airbag work with B0111 set?

Don't count on it. The code means the firing circuit is open, and Toyota's manual says the SRS light means a fault that needs inspection right away.
