B0092: Passenger presence system (seat occupant sensing) circuit fault (GM)

Passenger presence system fault, passenger airbag off

B0092 in short

On GM vehicles, B0092 means the airbag computer found a fault in the passenger presence system, the sensing in the front passenger seat. The airbag light stays on and the passenger airbag may read off. Repairs reported are under-seat wiring or the seat sensing module. Have it checked soon.

The passenger presence system decides whether the front passenger airbag may deploy by sensing whether someone is sitting there. B0092 is set when the computer finds a fault in that circuit, and the airbag light comes on.

GM bulletins list B0092 with the passenger airbag status indicator reading off. Owners of Saturn, Buick, Cadillac and Chevrolet vehicles report dealers replacing the passenger presence module or seat cushion, or repairing wiring under the seat, and some say the light returned.

B0092 may mean something different on other makers, so this page speaks only for the GM makes we could source.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Wiring or connector under the passenger seat

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
A Chevrolet Colorado owner says a dealer repaired wires under the passenger seat for B0092, though the light came back afterward.
    What would change this
Rises if the light is intermittent or follows seat movement. Falls if the wiring checks good.
  2. Cause 2: Passenger presence module or seat sensing assembly

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM bulletins and several dealer readouts quoted in complaints recommend replacing the module or seat cushion, though one Saturn owner reports the fix did not last.
    What would change this
Rises if wiring and connectors check good. Falls if a connector repair clears the code.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Have the airbag codes read with a scan tool that can talk to the airbag module, and note every code stored.

Low riskTool: scan tool with airbag (SRS) access

    • IfB0092 is stored, with or without B0081

It meansThe passenger presence system reads a fault.

      Go to step 2

    • IfOther airbag codes are stored as well

It meansA technician should work through them in the order the service manual gives.

      Go to step 3

  2. Step 2: Give your VIN to the dealer and ask whether a service bulletin or warranty extension covers this code on your car.

    Low risk

    • IfA bulletin or extension applies

It meansThe dealer repairs it under the bulletin.

      Go to step 3

    • IfNothing applies

It meansThe circuit still needs a diagnosis.

      Go to step 3

  3. Step 3: Leave the diagnosis to a dealer or trained technician, who measures the circuit with the service manual procedure.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool with airbag access, manufacturer procedure

Warning:Airbag wiring can set off an airbag if it is probed, disconnected or powered the wrong way, and that can cause serious injury. Do not test or unplug airbag connectors yourself.

Symptoms

  • Airbag (SRS) warning light stays on after the engine starts
  • Passenger airbag status indicator reads off with someone seated

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.
