B0081: Passenger presence (seat occupant sensing) system fault

Passenger presence system fault, passenger airbag disabled

B0081 in short

B0081 means the airbag computer has found a fault in the passenger presence system, the seat sensor that decides whether the front passenger airbag may deploy. GM service information says the passenger airbag is switched off and the airbag light stays on while it is set. Have it checked soon, and never probe airbag wiring yourself.

The passenger presence system (PPS) uses a sensor and a small module in the front passenger seat to judge who is sitting there. It reports to the airbag computer, which GM calls the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).

GM service information sets B0081 when the passenger presence module reports an internal fault, a sensor preload problem, a calibration that was never learned, or the wrong part fitted. The airbag computer then disables the passenger front airbag and turns on the AIR BAG light.

It is often not the module. GM bulletins say most B0081 cases on 2009 trucks and SUVs came from communication, power or ground faults at connectors and splices, that phones or laptops on the passenger seat can set it, and, for the Camaro, not to replace the modules for this concern.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Poor connection in the passenger presence system power, ground or communication wiring

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM bulletin PIT-4874 says B0081 on 2009 full-size trucks and SUVs most often sets from a communication fault, and directs inspection of connectors, terminals and splice packs before any module is replaced. A Cobalt bulletin also directs a PPS connector inspection.
    What would change this
Rises if the technician finds a backed-out terminal or poorly seated connector at the PPS, SDM or a splice pack. Falls if all connections are sound.
  2. Cause 2: Electronic device or aftermarket seat heater interfering with the seat sensor

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM bulletin SB-08-09-41-007A and GM service information say computers, MP3 players, phones or a scan tool on the passenger seat, or an aftermarket seat heater, can interfere with the sensor and set B0081.
    What would change this
Rises if the code is cleared and stays off once the seat is empty. Falls if it returns with nothing on the seat.
  3. Cause 3: Right front seat belt buckle fault

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
GM bulletin SB-07-09-41-010A pairs B0081 in the airbag computer with B0071 in the passenger presence module and has the right front seat belt buckle diagnosed and replaced if necessary.
    What would change this
Rises if B0071 is stored in the passenger presence module. Falls if it is not.
  4. Cause 4: Passenger presence module internal fault, missing calibration or wrong part

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
GM service information lists an internal module fault, a calibration not learned and an incorrect component installed among B0081's failure types, but GM bulletins warn against replacing modules before the wiring is checked.
    What would change this
Rises if wiring checks pass and the code's symptom byte points to the module, calibration or part number. Falls if a connection fault is found.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Have the airbag codes read, including the symptom number after B0081 and any codes stored in the passenger presence module.

Low riskTool: scan tool with airbag (SRS) access

  2. Step 2: Remove phones, laptops and other objects from the front passenger seat, then have the code cleared and see whether it comes back.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Ask a GM dealer whether a bulletin covers B0081 on your model and year.

    Low risk

    • IfA bulletin applies

It meansThe dealer follows it, which usually starts with a connector inspection.

      Go to step 4

    • IfNo bulletin applies

It meansThe system needs the full service manual diagnosis.

      Go to step 4

  4. Step 4: Have a trained technician inspect the passenger presence system and airbag computer power, ground and communication connections, following the service manual.

Best left to a shopTool: GM diagnostic tool and service information

Warning:Never probe airbag connectors or wiring with a test light or meter, and never unplug them yourself. Nissan warns that airbags and pretensioners can still deploy after the ignition is off, and that test equipment must not be used on airbag circuits unless the service manual calls for it. Leave this to a dealer or trained technician.

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light stays on
  • Passenger airbag off indicator lit with an adult in the seat
  • Passenger airbag indicator and seat belt reminder come on when a phone or laptop sits on the passenger seat

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

Parts and cost context

  • Passenger presence module and sensor:Don't buy a module first. GM bulletins point to connections and communication faults in most cases, and one Camaro bulletin says not to replace the modules. Any replacement must be the exact part, because GM lists a wrong component as one failure type. Labour varies; get a quote.

B0081 questions

Can a phone on the passenger seat really cause B0081?

Yes. GM says computers, phones, MP3 players or a scan tool on the seat can interfere with the passenger sensor. Clear the seat and have the code cleared; if it stays off, no further diagnosis is needed.

Does the passenger airbag work while B0081 is set?

GM service information says the airbag computer disables the passenger front airbag while this code is set. Seat children in the back and get it checked soon.
