U1424: On Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles, U1424 means a module received an implausible engine torque signal

Implausible engine torque signal received

U1424 in short

On Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles, U1424 means a module received an implausible engine torque signal. FCA bulletins treat it as a PCM software flash item on several models, and owners also report power loss and shutoffs. Have it checked soon, and stop if the engine shuts off.

The engine computer sends a torque figure that other modules, such as the transmission and stability systems, use. When what arrives does not make sense, U1424 is stored. FCA words it as "Implausible Engine Torque Signal Received".

FCA bulletins for the 2014-2016 Cherokee, 2016 Chrysler 200, 2016 Charger and Challenger and 2013-2015 Ram 1500 list U1424 among codes fixed by reprogramming the engine computer. A Dodge Caliber owner read it with U1407 and U1425 and an ETC light with power loss. Two Ram 1500 owners had the engine shut off with U1424 stored and the dealer pointed to crank or cam sensors.

The sources do not name one cause, so test before replacing sensors.

Pick your make

U1424 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.

Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Engine computer software that needs a flash

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
FCA 18-035-16, 18-051-16, 18-032-16 and 18-103-16 list U1424 among codes that PCM reprogramming addresses on specific models.
    What would change this
Rises on listed models with software not updated. Falls once updated; a Cherokee owner saw the code return after recall flashes.
How to test the engine control module (ecm / pcm)
  2. Cause 2: Crankshaft or camshaft position sensor problem

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
A Ram dealer planned to change the crankshaft sensor and another Ram had a cam sensor replaced without a fix, and bulletins list P0335 with U1424.
    What would change this
Rises if P0335 or P0340 is stored and the engine shuts off. Falls if a sensor swap does not stop it.
  3. Cause 3: Throttle or pedal signal problem (Caliber)

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
A Dodge Caliber owner stored U1407, U1424 and U1425 with an ETC light and power loss, and a Charger and Challenger bulletin lists throttle position circuit codes with U1424.
    What would change this
Rises with an ETC light and throttle codes. Falls if no throttle codes are present.
How to test the electronic throttle body

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes and note whether U0402, P0335, P0340 or throttle position codes are stored with U1424, and whether the engine has shut off.

    Low riskTool: scan tool

  2. Step 2: Have a technician check the crankshaft and camshaft sensors, throttle and pedal signals and wiring against live data.

    Best left to a shop

Warning:An engine that shuts off at speed is a safety risk; leave testing to a shop.

Symptoms

  • Check engine or ETC light
  • Engine shuts off at stops or speed Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Loss of power Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Rough idle at start-up
