U0452: A module received data from the restraints (airbag) control module that did not make sense
Invalid data received from restraints control module
Severity: Inspect soon
The code points at the restraints (airbag) system, Ford ties it to an airbag lamp and a SYNC 911 Assist fault, and a Mazda owner reported a seat belt that engaged late in a crash, so the safety system needs a prompt check.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Stop if a reduced power message, loss of steering assist or an engine stall appears with the code: pull over safely and arrange a tow.
U0452 in short
U0452 means a module got invalid data from the restraints control module, the airbag computer. Ford ties it to an airbag lamp and a SYNC 911 Assist fault that a software update fixes on 2017-2018 Fusion and MKZ. Because airbags may be affected, have it checked soon.
The restraints control module decides when airbags and belt pretensioners fire and shares crash data with other modules. A module that receives data from it that fails a check stores U0452. A Mazda CX-30 owner read the code as "invalid data received from restraints control panel" after a crash.
Ford bulletins for the 2017-2018 Fusion and MKZ list U0452 in the infotainment module with an airbag lamp and say to reprogram the restraints module. A 2015-2017 F-150 bulletin shows U0452 stored in the front controls interface module with other codes when network traffic locks the module up. GM bulletins list it among many codes on 2014-2017 trucks and SUVs where a pinched body control module ground is the named check.
Because airbags are involved, this page explains the code only and gives no repair steps.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Restraints control module software that needs an update (Fusion and MKZ)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford SSM 46109 and SSM 46901 tell dealers to reprogram the restraints module and redo the as-built configuration when U0452 and related codes are stored with an airbag lamp.
- What would change this
- Rises on 2017-2018 Fusion and MKZ with an airbag lamp. Falls on other vehicles or after the update.
Cause 2: Body control module ground pinched by the dash insulator mat (some GM trucks)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- GM PIT5405B lists U0452 with many codes and has dealers check the G218 ground and connectors X183 and X133.
- What would change this
- Rises on 2014-2017 GM trucks and SUVs with many codes. Falls if grounds are good.
Cause 3: Network traffic locking up the front controls interface module (F-150)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford SSM 46902 names excessive CAN traffic as the possible cause of U0452 and other codes in the FCIM on 2015-2017 F-150.
- What would change this
- Rises with A/C, radio or window switch trouble. Falls if those work normally.
Cause 4: Transmission lead frame fault stored with it (F-150 owner report)
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- One 2017 F-150 owner links U0452-82 with U0155, U0401 and a transmission code to a lead frame failure, but gives no shop confirmation.
- What would change this
- Rises if transmission codes and shifting trouble appear with it. Falls if the transmission behaves normally.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all modules for codes and note whether the airbag lamp is on and which modules store U0452.
IfAirbag lamp on and the car is a 2017-2018 Fusion or MKZ
It meansAsk a dealer about the Ford software update.
Points to: Restraints control module software that needs an update (Fusion and MKZ)
IfMany codes and a reduced power message on a GM truck or SUV
It meansAsk a dealer to check the body control module ground.
Points to: Body control module ground pinched by the dash insulator mat (some GM trucks)
Step 2: Have a technician check the restraints module, its connectors and the network, and follow the maker bulletin for the exact vehicle.
Warning:Airbag systems can fire unexpectedly; leave all testing near airbag modules and wiring to a trained technician.
IfSoftware is out of date
It meansReprogram and redo the configuration under the maker procedure.
Points to: Restraints control module software that needs an update (Fusion and MKZ)
IfNetwork traffic or grounds are at fault
It meansRepair and retest.
Points to: Network traffic locking up the front controls interface module (F-150)
Symptoms
- Airbag lamp on
- SYNC 911 Assist not operational message
- Reduced power, stall or lost steering assist Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- A/C, radio or window switches intermittent
How to fix
This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.
