U0428: U0428 is a generic network code: a module received invalid data from the steering angle sensor or steering angle control module, which stability control and power steering rely on

Invalid data from steering angle sensor module

U0428 in short

U0428 means a computer received invalid data from the steering angle sensor module. Owners report stability and traction warnings, and some report a steering wheel that locks or turns hard. Because steering is involved, have a technician diagnose it promptly and stop driving if the steering feels wrong.

The steering angle sensor tells stability control and power steering which way the wheel is pointed. When another computer judges that data to be invalid, it stores U0428.

On the 2012 Ford F-150, owners report U0428 with C1B00 or C1963 and steering lock-up, and one was told the electric steering rack was needed. On Jeep and Chrysler models owners report it among several codes with steering lock-up, and a Jeep bulletin summary for a PCM flash lists U0428.

Because steering is involved, this page explains the code only and gives no repair steps.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Steering angle sensor or steering rack fault

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
One F-150 owner reports the dealer diagnosing the steering sensor as bad and not serviceable, so the electric steering rack is needed.
    What would change this
Rises if C1B00 or steering-sensor codes are stored too. Falls if network or software causes are found.
How to test the power steering control module
  2. Cause 2: Software update for the powertrain computer

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
A Jeep bulletin summary for the 2017 Cherokee covers a PCM flash and lists U0428, but the summary does not show it as the fix for this code.
    What would change this
Rises if the exact bulletin names this code and symptoms. Falls if the sensor or rack tests bad.
How to test the engine control module (ecm / pcm)
  3. Cause 3: Network wiring or power problem

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Invalid-data codes can also come from power, ground, wiring or other modules on the network.
    What would change this
Rises with several other network codes. Falls if only steering data is wrong.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read every stored code from all modules and note whether steering, stability or C1B00 codes are also stored.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads all modules

    • IfSteering or stability codes are stored together with U0428

It meansThe steering angle data path is the likely problem; a technician should test it.

      Go to step 2

    • IfMany network codes are stored at once

It meansLook for a wider power, ground or network fault.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Have a technician check the steering angle sensor signal, its power and ground, and look for a software bulletin for the exact car.

    Best left to a shop

Warning:Steering repairs and calibrations affect vehicle control; leave testing and repair to a trained technician.

Symptoms

  • Stability, traction or Advance Trac warnings
  • Steering wheel locks, turns hard or feels unresponsive Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Check engine light with U0428

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

U0428 questions

Is U0428 a steering problem?

It means a computer got invalid steering angle data. Owners report steering lock-up or heavy steering with it on some models, so treat it as a steering concern and stop driving if the steering feels wrong.
