U0412: A module received invalid data from the battery energy control module, the computer that manages the high-voltage battery
Invalid data from battery energy control module A
Severity: Inspect soon
Chrysler fixes U0412 with battery pack module software, but Pacifica Hybrid owners report sudden loss of propulsion with it and one dealer called it a serious high-voltage battery problem. It involves the high-voltage battery, so have a dealer check it soon.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Pull over safely if the car loses propulsion, enters limp mode or shows a Stop Safely or vehicle will shut off message. Pacifica Hybrid owners report this with U0412.
U0412 in short
U0412 means a module received data it could not trust from the battery energy control module, which manages the high-voltage battery. On Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and some other plug-in and mild hybrids it is often fixed with a battery module software update, but it can also point to a battery fault. Have a dealer check it soon.
Hybrids and plug-in hybrids have a battery energy control module (Chrysler calls it the battery pack control module) that reports the high-voltage battery state to the rest of the car. U0412 sets when another module receives a message from it that fails a validity check, not a total loss of contact.
Most reports come from the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Chrysler has bulletins that reflash the battery pack module or hybrid control processor for U0412 on 2017-2019 Pacificas, and Ram has one for the 2025 ProMaster. Some owners still report loss of propulsion, and one dealer suspected the battery itself.
This is high-voltage territory, so there are no DIY steps beyond reading codes and asking about bulletins.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Battery pack control module or hybrid controller software
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Chrysler and Ram bulletins update the battery pack module or hybrid control processor for U0412, and dealers have flashed the module for it on a 2019 Pacifica and a 2019 Wrangler eTorque.
- What would change this
- Rises if your vehicle matches a bulletin and the module is not on the latest software. Falls if the code returns after the update.
Cause 2: High-voltage battery fault
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- One Pacifica dealer reported a serious high-voltage battery problem with U0412 and P0BBE, and a Wrangler eTorque lost power days after a software flash for U0412 and P0A94.
- What would change this
- Rises if battery-related codes are stored with U0412 or the code returns after a software update.
Cause 3: Wiring or connector fault on the data link
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Reference sources list corrupted network data and corroded or loose connectors as causes of invalid-data codes.
- What would change this
- Rises if other modules also report invalid or lost data. Falls if the network tests clean.
Cause 4: Battery energy control module failure
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- An internal fault in the module itself can send bad data.
- What would change this
- Rises only after software, wiring and the battery have been ruled out.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Have the codes read from every module, including the hybrid and battery modules, and note any battery-related codes.
IfU0412 alone or with U029A on a Pacifica Hybrid
It meansCheck for a software bulletin.
IfU0412 with battery codes such as P0BBE or P0A94
It meansThe battery may be involved; dealer diagnosis needed.
Step 2: Ask a dealer to check your VIN for battery pack module or hybrid controller software updates and open recalls.
IfAn update applies
It meansHave it installed.
Points to: Battery pack control module or hybrid controller software
IfAlready updated and the code returns
It meansFurther high-voltage diagnosis is needed.
Step 3: Have a dealer test the battery energy control module, its network wiring and the high-voltage battery.
Warning:High-voltage battery work can kill. Leave diagnosis and repair to a dealer or hybrid specialist.
IfBattery fault found
It meansRepair per the dealer.
IfWiring or connector fault
It meansRepair the wiring.
IfModule fault confirmed
It meansReplace and program the module.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Sudden loss of propulsion, limp mode or Stop Safely message Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Battery warning light

U0412 questions
Is it safe to keep charging a Pacifica Hybrid with U0412?
Ask the dealer first and check for open recalls on your VIN. One owner reports that their recall notice advised not to recharge and to park outside until the repair was done.
