P2872: Clutch A stuck engaged
Clutch A stuck engaged
Severity: Inspect soon
Kelley Blue Book does not recommend driving with P2872, and Toyota tells owners to have the car inspected right away when the check engine light comes on for the transmission. Ford Focus owners report losing drive with it.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The car loses drive, shows Transmission Fault Service Now, or goes into limp mode. Focus owners report this with P2872, but we found no maker source saying whether you must stop
P2872 in short
P2872 means the transmission computer thinks clutch A is still engaged when it should have released. It is reported mainly on the Ford Focus with the PowerShift dual-clutch transmission. Worn or contaminated clutches, the clutch actuator and wiring are common causes. Have it inspected soon, and stop driving if it loses drive.
Dual-clutch and some automated transmissions use clutches that the computer opens and closes with actuators. P2872 sets when clutch A stays engaged after being told to release, judged from clutch position or shaft speeds.
Owners of 2012–2018 Ford Focus models report P2872 with Transmission Fault messages and loss of drive. Dealers have replaced clutches, and one owner traced it to a damaged harness near the clutch position sensor.
Most likely causes
These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.
Cause 1: Worn, contaminated or defective clutch pack
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- A defective clutch and debris are listed causes, and a Ford dealer called for clutch replacement with P2872.
- What would change this
- Rises if the clutch slips or shudders or has high mileage.
Cause 2: Clutch actuator motor fault
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- The clutch actuator motor is the first cause listed by code references.
- What would change this
- Rises if actuator codes are stored or the actuator does not respond.
Cause 3: Clutch position sensor or actuator wiring damage
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- One Focus owner traced P2872 and P0806 to harness damage near the clutch position sensor.
- What would change this
- Rises if P0806 or another clutch sensor code is stored.
Cause 4: Clutch adaptive values need relearning
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Clutch motor training (a relearn) is a listed cause.
- What would change this
- Rises after a battery disconnect or clutch repair without a relearn.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared.
IfP0806 or other clutch position sensor codes are stored
It meansCheck the sensor wiring first.
IfP07A3 or other clutch codes are stored
It meansThe clutch itself is more likely.
IfP2872 alone
It meansHave a shop check the actuator and clutch.
Step 2: Have a shop test the clutch actuator and position sensor, inspect the clutch and run the clutch relearn.
Warning:Shop test. Dual-clutch actuator and clutch work needs special tools and the maker's procedure.
IfThe actuator does not respond or its wiring is damaged
It meansRepair the actuator or wiring.
IfThe clutch is worn or contaminated
It meansReplace the clutch.
IfParts test good
It meansRun the clutch relearn and recheck.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Transmission Fault Service Now message
- Shudder or rough engagement
- Loss of drive or limp mode Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read; the stored data helps the shop.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open P2872 bulletin or software update.
