P2764: Torque converter clutch pressure control solenoid control circuit low
TCC pressure solenoid circuit low
Severity: Inspect soon
Kelley Blue Book rates P2764 as extremely serious, and Toyota tells owners to have the car inspected right away when the check engine light comes on for the automatic transmission.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The AT oil temperature light flashes, the vehicle lurches or will not drive. A Subaru dealer told one owner not to drive and to tow it, but we found no maker source saying whether you must stop
P2764 in short
P2764 means the computer saw a low voltage on the circuit for the solenoid that controls torque converter clutch pressure, often from a short to ground or a failed solenoid. Expect shudder, lurching or warning lights. Wiring, the solenoid or valve body and the torque converter are common causes. Have it inspected promptly.
The torque converter clutch locks the engine to the transmission at cruising speed. A solenoid controls the pressure that applies it. P2764 sets when the computer sees the voltage on that solenoid's control circuit is lower than expected, typically a short to ground or an open solenoid.
Owners most often report P2764 on Subaru CVTs, where dealers replaced the solenoid or valve body, and on Chrysler 62TE minivans. Chrysler's 62TE guidance says to check the solenoid and, if it is good, suspect the torque converter.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Wiring short to ground or connector fault
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- A low-circuit code points to wiring first, and a Chrysler dealer found the feed to the valve body shorted to ground.
- What would change this
- Rises if the circuit has low resistance to ground.
Cause 2: Faulty TCC pressure solenoid or valve body
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- The solenoid and valve body are listed causes, and Subaru dealers replaced them for P2764.
- What would change this
- Rises if the solenoid resistance is out of spec.
Cause 3: Torque converter failure (Chrysler 62TE)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Chrysler says if a 62TE is jerking or slipping with P2764 and the solenoid tests good, the torque converter has failed.
- What would change this
- Rises on a 62TE vehicle that jerks or slips with a good solenoid.
Cause 4: Low or dirty fluid or leaks
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Fluid and leaks are listed, though they less often cause a circuit-low code.
- What would change this
- Rises if the fluid is low.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared.
IfP0740 or other converter clutch codes are also stored
It meansCheck the solenoid and converter.
IfP2764 alone
It meansHave the circuit tested.
Step 2: Check for a P2764 bulletin for your VIN at a dealer or on the NHTSA site.
IfA Chrysler, Dodge or Ram ProMaster with the 62TE that jerks or slips
It meansChrysler says check the TCC solenoid, then the torque converter.
IfNo bulletin applies
It meansA shop needs to test the circuit.
Step 3: Have a shop check the solenoid circuit for a short to ground and measure the solenoid.
Warning:Shop test. It needs the maker's wiring diagram.
IfThe circuit is shorted to ground
It meansRepair the wiring.
IfThe solenoid is out of spec
It meansReplace the solenoid or valve body as the maker directs.
Symptoms
- Check engine light, often with other dash lights
- Shudder at cruising speed
- AT oil temperature light flashing (Subaru) Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Lurching or will not drive Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read; the stored data helps the shop.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open P2764 bulletin or software update.

Supported by vehicle dataChrysler 9004206 says P2764 with jerking or slipping on the 62TE points to the TCC solenoid or the torque converter (also Chrysler 200, Town & Country and Ram ProMaster). The bulletin is on NHTSA, but whether it is still current is not verified, so it is labelled vehicle data rather than confirmed.

If jerking or slipping with P0740 or P2764, check the TCC solenoid; if good, replace the torque converter. Also covers the Chrysler 200 and Town & Country and Ram ProMaster. Only the NHTSA flat-file summary was read, not the bulletin itself.
We couldn't confirm whether this bulletin is still current, so it doesn't count as confirmation.
