P2565: Turbo boost control position sensor signal reading too high
P2565 turbocharger boost control position sensor A circuit high
Severity: Monitor
The reference page rates this as moderate (to serious): weak acceleration, poor economy and a possible hard start, with no immediate hazard.
It gets more serious if:
- Inspect soon: Inspect soon if the check engine light flashes, power drops sharply, or the engine will not start. The reference page lists a flashing light and weak performance.
P2565 in short
P2565 means the signal from the turbo boost control position sensor is too high. An open ground, a signal wire shorted to power, or a bad sensor are the usual causes. It also appears in Kia bulletins and in Ford 6.7L Super Duty turbo bulletins. Expect weak power; get it checked soon.
The turbocharger boost is controlled by an actuator or vane that moves, and a position sensor tells the computer where it is. P2565 sets when the signal from that sensor reads abnormally high.
The usual causes are a bad sensor, wiring or connector damage with a short or open signal circuit, or a turbo or actuator that is out of adjustment. The computer itself is rare.
Kia found this on 2011-2012 Sportage and Optima 2.0 T-GDI engines: its bulletins have the ECM reflashed and the electronic waste gate actuator rod length checked or adjusted. Ford has bulletins that list P2565 among the codes on 2020-2022 6.7L Super Duty trucks with turbo noise and lack of power.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Sensor, wiring or connector fault in the boost control position circuit
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Reference pages list a damaged position sensor, an open ground and shorted or open signal circuits as the main causes.
- What would change this
- Rises if the harness or connector is damaged or sensor voltage is out of range on a scan tool. Falls if the circuit tests good.
Cause 2: Electronic waste gate actuator rod out of adjustment or ECM software (2011-2012 Kia Sportage and Optima 2.0 T-GDI)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Kia bulletins TSB 130, TSB-ENG130R1, TSB-ENG138 and TSB-ENG099R3 cover P2562 and/or P2565 on 2.0 T-GDI Sportage and Optima, with a reflash and a check or adjustment of the actuator rod. Summaries only.
- What would change this
- Rises on an affected Kia in the built-date ranges. Falls on other vehicles.
Cause 3: Turbocharger or actuator fault (Ford 6.7L Super Duty 2020-2022)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford SSM 50564 and its revisions list P2564 and P2565 with turbo noise and lack of power on 6.7L Super Duty, and say to replace the turbocharger if workshop diagnostics lead to it. Summaries only.
- What would change this
- Rises on an affected truck with noise and power loss. Falls on other vehicles.
Cause 4: Turbocharger replacement bulletin (2015-2016 Jeep Renegade)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- FCA bulletin 09-003-16 covers a turbocharger replacement with position sensor deviation codes on the 2015-2016 Renegade. Only the NHTSA summary was read.
- What would change this
- Rises on a Renegade with a performance drop. Falls on other vehicles.
Cause 5: Boost leak or loose hose clamp
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- The P2562 reference page lists leaking hoses and loose clamps as related causes to check.
- What would change this
- Rises if a boost leak test fails. Falls if the system holds pressure.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all codes and watch the boost position sensor value and the commanded position on a scan tool.
IfSensor voltage is out of range or stuck
It meansCheck the sensor circuit and actuator.
IfValues look normal
It meansCheck bulletins.
Step 2: Inspect the actuator wiring and connector for damage, and have the actuator and turbo checked.
Warning:Turbo parts get very hot, and the system is under pressure when running. Leave testing to a shop.
IfDamaged wiring, an open ground or a shorted signal wire
It meansRepair the circuit.
Points to: Sensor, wiring or connector fault in the boost control position circuit
IfThe circuit is good and the sensor still reads wrong
It meansThe sensor or actuator is suspect.
Points to: Sensor, wiring or connector fault in the boost control position circuit
IfA boost leak is found
It meansRepair the hose or clamp.
Step 3: Ask a dealer whether the vehicle has a bulletin for these codes (Kia 2.0 T-GDI Sportage and Optima, Ford 6.7L Super Duty, Jeep Renegade).
IfA Kia 2.0 T-GDI in the affected build range
It meansThe reflash and actuator rod check apply.
IfA 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Super Duty with turbo noise and low power
It meansThe turbo bulletin applies.
Points to: Turbocharger or actuator fault (Ford 6.7L Super Duty 2020-2022)
IfA 2015-2016 Jeep Renegade with a power drop
It meansThe turbo replacement bulletin may apply.
Points to: Turbocharger replacement bulletin (2015-2016 Jeep Renegade)
Symptoms
- Check engine light, sometimes flashing Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Weak acceleration or low power
- Poor fuel economy or a hard start
- Turbo whine or noise on Ford 6.7L Super Duty
Compare with: Check engine light with loss of power
