P2534: Voltage on the ignition switch run/start circuit read by the computer is too low

Ignition switch run/start position circuit low

Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected

No source grades P2534, but the cited reports include stalling at highway speed and a stuck gear, so it can affect driving.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Inspect soon if the engine stalls, the transmission sticks in one gear or the truck loses power. A 2024 Yukon XL complaint and a 2015 Canyon complaint describe stalling and a stuck gear with this code.

P2534 in short

P2534 means the computer sees too little voltage on the ignition switch's run/start circuit. A blown fuse, a wiring or connector fault, or the ignition switch itself can cause it, and on some GM and FCA vehicles updated software. Stalling or a stuck gear should be checked promptly.

The ignition switch sends a run/start voltage to several modules so they know the key is on. P2534 sets when a module sees that voltage drop too low.

GM lists the code in a 2020-2024 Silverado and Sierra HD bulletin for stalls or no-starts, and in a 2008 CTS/STS bulletin where it is set in the transmission control module. FCA lists it among codes fixed by a hybrid control processor update on the 2021 Ram 1500.

Owner complaints connect it with a burnt TCM fuse and a stuck gear on a Canyon, and with low-voltage and communication codes on a Yukon XL after an engine replacement.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Blown fuse, wiring or connector fault in the ignition feed

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net lists wiring short to ground, fuse and ignition switch. A Canyon complaint found a burnt TCM fuse with P2534, and a mechanic there stretched the wire bundle to check wiring.
    What would change this
Rises if a fuse is blown or a connector at the TCM or fuse block is loose or burnt. Falls if fuses and connectors are intact.
How to test the underhood fuse block (engine compartment fuse box)
  2. Cause 2: Module software or calibration update (some GM and FCA vehicles)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM bulletins PIP4276B and 24-NA-124 and FCA bulletin 08-037-21 list P2534. PIP4276B says to update the TCM calibration; the others list it with other DTCs.
    What would change this
Rises if the VIN is in a bulletin range and software is not current. Falls if updated and the code returns.
How to test the transmission control module (tcm)
  3. Cause 3: Ignition switch or run/start relay

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net names the ignition switch as a cause.
    What would change this
Rises if the key-on voltage drops when the key is moved or wiggled. Falls if voltage is steady.
How to test the engine controls ignition relay
  4. Cause 4: Low system voltage or body control module problem

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
The 2024 Yukon XL complaint pairs P2534 with a BCM communication code and says the BCM disabled the AC for low voltage. This is a single owner report.
    What would change this
Rises if battery or charging voltage is low or several modules log low voltage. Falls if system voltage is normal.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes in every module, noting P0700, U3018, U3023 and charging codes. Check battery voltage with the engine off and running.

Low riskTool: scan tool and multimeter

  2. Step 2: Check the fuses for the TCM, ECM and ignition circuits, and inspect the related connectors for looseness or burn marks.

    Use caution

Warning:A fuse that keeps blowing means a short; do not install a larger fuse, as the wiring could overheat.

  3. Step 3: Have a shop test the ignition switch voltage and look for TSBs or software updates for the VIN.

    Best left to a shop

Warning:Disconnect the battery before touching ignition wiring; on vehicles with airbags wait the time the manufacturer specifies before working near the steering column.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Stalling or no start Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Stuck in one gear or transmission warning Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Other warning lights with low voltage

P2534 questions

Why does P2534 appear with P0700?

P0700 is the transmission control module asking for the check engine light. GM and owner reports list both when the ignition voltage to the module is low.
