P2450: EVAP switching valve (fuel tank isolation valve) not working as commanded

Evaporative emission system switching valve performance / fuel tank isolation valve stuck

Severity: Monitor

The bulletins describe a lit check engine light and, on plug-in hybrids, trouble refuelling, rather than a driving hazard, but one F-150 owner reports the truck cutting out after a stop.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Inspect soon if the engine cuts out or hesitates when accelerating after a stop, or on a plug-in hybrid if the fuel door will not open.

P2450 in short

P2450 means the computer found the EVAP switching valve, also called the fuel tank isolation valve, stuck or not responding as commanded. Causes include the valve itself, engine computer software on some Fords, loose in-tank vapour connections or overfilling a hybrid tank. It is usually driveable, but have it checked.

On many newer vehicles, and especially sealed-tank hybrids, a valve between the fuel tank and the EVAP canister is opened and closed by the computer. P2450 is set when that valve does not move or seal the way it was commanded.

Ford has bulletins that tie the code to PCM software on 2021-2025 F-150 and 2023-2025 Maverick and Escape, to improperly connected vapour lines inside the tank on 2024-2026 Expedition and Navigator, and on 2020-2025 hybrids to overfilling the tank. Jeep and Chrysler plug-in hybrids use a fuel tank isolation valve bulletin that can also stop the fuel door opening.

Owners of 2015 F-150 trucks report the EVAP blocking valve itself stuck and replaced, so a failed valve is possible, but check bulletins first.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Fuel tank isolation or EVAP switching valve stuck

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Owner complaints on a 2015 F-150 report the EVAP blocking valve stuck and replaced, a 2024 Tundra readout names the code as a stuck switching valve actuator, and Jeep describes it as "fuel tank isolation valve stuck open".
    What would change this
Rises if the valve does not click or hold when commanded on a scan tool. Falls if it moves normally.
How to test the evap canister vent valve
  2. Cause 2: Engine computer software that needs an update

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford bulletins for 2015 F-150 (TSB 18-2387), 2018 F-150 (TSB 18-2252) and 2021-2025 F-150 (TSB 25-2165) tie P2450 to the PCM and its software level.
    What would change this
Rises if a dealer finds your VIN covered and the PCM not at the latest level. Falls if it is already up to date.
How to test the engine control module (ecm / pcm)
  3. Cause 3: Tank overfilled on a hybrid

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford SSM 53601 says that on 2020-2025 hybrids P2450:00 may be caused by the customer overfilling the tank, and tells owners not to top off after the first automatic shut-off.
    What would change this
Rises if the code appeared right after a fill-up that went past the first shut-off. Falls if the tank was filled normally.
  4. Cause 4: Vapour line connections inside the fuel tank improperly connected

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford TSB 26-2023 names improperly connected EVAP line connections inside the fuel tank for P2418:72 and/or P2450 on 2024-2026 Expedition and Navigator.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered vehicle with P2418 stored too. Falls on any other vehicle.
  5. Cause 5: Fuel vapour valve fault on plug-in hybrids (Wrangler 4xe, Pacifica PHEV)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
FCA bulletin 14-012-25 pairs P2450 with a fuel door that will not open and has the fuel vapour valve replaced.
    What would change this
Rises if the fuel door will not release. Falls on a non-hybrid.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data. Note whether P144C, P1450, P0455 or P0456 are stored with P2450.

    Low riskTool: OBD-II scan tool

    • IfP144C is stored too on an F-150

It meansFord groups them in one bulletin.

      Go to step 2

    • IfP2450 alone or with other EVAP codes

      It meansAsk about bulletins.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a PCM software update or EVAP bulletin for P2450 (Ford F-150, Escape, Maverick, Expedition, Navigator; Jeep and Chrysler plug-in hybrids).

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: On a hybrid, think about whether the tank was filled past the first automatic pump shut-off before the light came on.

    Low risk

  4. Step 4: Command the isolation or switching valve with a bidirectional scan tool and check that it opens, closes and holds.

Warning:Work on a vented fuel system can release flammable vapour. Let a shop do it.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light with the car otherwise normal
  • Hard to fill the tank, or the pump keeps shutting off (hybrids)
  • Fuel door will not open (plug-in hybrids) Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Engine cuts out when accelerating after a stop Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: On a hybrid, stop the pump at the first automatic shut-off and do not top off, then see if the code returns after it is cleared.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open PCM software or EVAP bulletin for P2450.

P2450 questions

Is P2450 caused by overfilling the gas tank?

On 2020-2025 Ford hybrids, Ford says it can be. Stop at the first automatic pump shut-off and do not top off.

Do I need a new valve for P2450?

Not always. Ford ties the code to PCM software on several trucks and to in-tank vapour connections on some SUVs. Ask about bulletins before buying a valve.
