P2422: EVAP vent valve will not open, so fresh air cannot get into the fuel vapour system

EVAP system vent valve stuck closed / restricted vent

Severity: Monitor

P2422 is an emissions fault that usually causes no driving problem, and KBB says you can keep driving if it is the only code, though it will fail an emissions test.

Source: how we rate severity

P2422 in short

P2422 means the EVAP vent valve is stuck closed or the vent path is blocked, so the system cannot draw in fresh air. Dirt or spider webs in the vent line are common, then a failed vent valve. The car normally drives fine, but it will not pass an emissions test until fixed.

The EVAP system traps fuel vapour from the tank. When the computer tests it, it closes the vent valve and uses engine vacuum, then opens the vent so fresh air can enter again. If the vent does not open, or the path behind it is blocked, the test fails and P2422 is stored.

The cause is not always the valve itself. Honda, Kia and Hyundai bulletins point to dirt or spider webs in the vent tube or lines, a vent joint fitted upside down, or the detection software on one Sonata.

Because the code often traces to a blockage, check the vent path before buying a valve.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Dirt or spider webs blocking the EVAP vent tube or lines

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Honda says dirt may clog the canister vent tube on Accord, Pilot, Passport and Ridgeline, and Kia says spider webs in the vent lines set P2422 on Sorento and Sportage. This is a repeated pattern across several makes.
    What would change this
Rises if the vent tube or filler neck area shows webs or dirt, or the vent opens freely once cleared. Falls if the path is clear and the valve still will not open.
How to test the evap charcoal canister
  2. Cause 2: Vent valve or canister closed valve stuck or failed

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
KBB lists the vent valve itself and its control solenoid as the first causes of a stuck-closed vent code.
    What would change this
Rises if the valve does not click or move when commanded on a scan tool and the path is clear. Falls if the valve works and airflow is blocked elsewhere.
How to test the evap canister vent valve
  3. Cause 3: Wiring, connector or vacuum line fault at the vent valve

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
KBB names wiring and connector faults in the vent valve control circuit and vacuum line problems as further causes.
    What would change this
Rises if the connector is corroded or loose or the valve has power but no control. Falls if the circuit tests normal.
  4. Cause 4: Fuel tank pressure sensor vent joint installed upside down (2011-2012 Ridgeline)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Honda bulletin 12-028 says moisture can enter and block the vent when the fuel tank pressure sensor vent end joint was installed upside down, setting P1454 and/or P2422 on 2011-2012 Ridgelines.
    What would change this
Rises on a 2011-2012 Ridgeline with moisture in the vent joint. Falls on other models.
How to test the fuel tank pressure sensor
  5. Cause 5: Engine computer detection logic (2020 Sonata)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Hyundai bulletin 21-01-009H updates the ECM software that detects a restricted vent valve for P2422 on the 2020 Sonata. It applies to one model and year only.
    What would change this
Rises if a dealer finds your VIN covered and the software is not updated. Falls on other vehicles or when the software is current.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: With the engine off and cool, look at the visible EVAP vent hose, filter and filler neck area for dirt, webs or a kinked hose.

    Low risk

  2. Step 2: Use a scan tool to command the vent valve open and closed and listen for a click.

    Low riskTool: bidirectional scan tool

  3. Step 3: Ask a dealer whether your model has a bulletin for P2422. Honda, Kia, Hyundai and Mazda have issued them.

    Low risk

Symptoms

  • Check engine light with no change in how the car drives
  • Fails an emissions test
  • A dusty or off-road driving history, or a spider-infested filler neck area

How to fix

  1. Step 1: With the engine off, check that the visible EVAP vent hose near the fuel filler and canister is attached, not kinked and free of webs or dirt.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open bulletin for P2422.
