P2421: The EVAP vent valve is reported stuck open

EVAP vent valve stuck open

Severity: Monitor

EVAP codes affect emissions rather than how the car drives; the cited reports show a check engine light and some fuel odor but no safety risk.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Inspect soon if you smell fuel in the cabin or see fuel dripping. A 2022 Taos owner reports a strong fuel smell in the passenger compartment with this code.

P2421 in short

P2421 means the EVAP vent valve, the valve that opens the fuel vapor canister to fresh air, appears to be stuck open when the computer wants it closed. It usually only lights the check engine light and can stop the EVAP leak test. Have a shop check the vent valve and canister soon.

The EVAP system holds fuel vapor in a canister. A vent valve lets air in and the computer closes it to test the system for leaks. P2421 is set when the valve seems stuck open during that test.

Several 2021-2024 Volkswagen Taos and Jetta owners report this code, often with the check engine light and sometimes with a remote start that fails. VW service communications also list P2421 as a customer complaint with P0456 and P0442.

TroubleCodes.net warns that GM and Volvo may define this code differently, so the meaning here is the generic one used by the sources cited.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: EVAP vent valve or vent solenoid stuck open

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
The code literally says the vent valve is stuck open, and Taos and Jetta owners quote dealer readouts to that effect. TroubleCodes.net lists vent and purge valves and control solenoids.
    What would change this
Rises if the valve will not close when commanded on a scan tool. Falls if it closes and holds vacuum.

  2. Cause 2: Damaged canister or cracked vapor lines

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net lists a clogged or damaged canister and cracked lines. A canister fault can keep the vent from sealing.
    What would change this
Rises if a smoke test finds a leak or visible damage. Falls if the system holds smoke.
How to test the evap charcoal canister
  3. Cause 3: Engine computer software that needs an update

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
One Taos complaint says a dealer did a software update after documenting P2421, but the code is reported as not permanently resolved, so it ranks low.
    What would change this
Rises if a dealer finds a bulletin for the VIN. Falls if the update was already done and the code returns.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes and freeze-frame. Note P0456, P0442 or P2402 stored with P2421.

    Low riskTool: scan tool

    • IfOther EVAP codes are stored

It meansWork the vent valve first because the leak test depends on it.

      Go to step 2

    • IfOnly P2421 is stored

It meansInspect the vent valve and canister area.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Inspect the vent valve connector, hoses and the canister area for dirt, damage and loose fittings. Have a shop command the valve closed with a scan tool and smoke-test the system.

Best left to a shopTool: smoke machine and scan tool

Warning:Fuel vapor is flammable. Work with the engine off and cool, in a ventilated area, with no flames or sparks nearby.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Remote start fails because of the check engine light
  • Fuel smell Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

P2421 questions

Why did a failed remote start show P2421?

One 2024 Jetta owner reported the check engine light and P2421 right after a remote start attempt failed; the connection is unproven.
