P2419: EVAP switching valve circuit reading low

Evaporative emission system switching valve control circuit low

Severity: Monitor

P2419 is an EVAP-monitor fault; it blocks the leak test and may bring a fuel smell, but it does not change how the car drives.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Have it checked soon if you smell fuel, which PartsAvatar lists as a sign with this code.

P2419 in short

P2419 means the computer saw low voltage in the EVAP switching valve circuit, a valve that is part of the leak detection pump or canister assembly. On Toyotas the canister assembly is often the fix when P2401 and P043E also appear. The car drives normally but will not pass emissions.

The switching valve helps the computer seal and test the EVAP system. P2419 sets when its control circuit reads low, from a short to ground, a broken wire or a failed valve.

PartsAvatar lists the leak detection pump, wiring, purge valve, canister, hoses and the pressure sensor as possible causes.

An IATN thread reports that, on a 2006 Scion xB and Corolla with related EVAP codes, replacing the charcoal canister and its parts fixed it; Toyota TSB-0046-10 ties the code group to fuel in the EVAP system.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Valve or wiring fault in the switching valve circuit

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
PartsAvatar says to test the pump solenoid and wiring first.
    What would change this
Rises if the circuit measures low or open. Falls if it tests normal.
  2. Cause 2: EVAP canister assembly contaminated or failed (Toyota)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Toyota TSB-0046-10 lists this group of codes with fuel in the EVAP system; IATN reports canister replacement on 2006 xB and Corolla.
    What would change this
Rises if P2401 and P043E also appear on a Toyota. Falls if a circuit fault is found.

  3. Cause 3: Blocked atmospheric line or hoses

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
PartsAvatar says to check for obstruction in atmospheric lines.
    What would change this
Rises if a line is blocked. Falls if flow is free.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes and look for P2401 and P043E on a Toyota or Scion.

    Low riskTool: scan tool

  2. Step 2: Have a shop test the switching valve circuit and inspect the canister for fuel or debris.

Warning:EVAP lines hold fuel vapor; keep ignition sources away.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Fuel odor Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Failed emissions test

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Check the fuel cap clicks tight and look for cracked EVAP hoses with the engine off.

P2419 questions

Why do P2419, P2401 and P043E show together?

On some Toyotas they share one cause, fuel or contamination in the EVAP canister assembly, per Toyota bulletins.
