P2299: Brake pedal and accelerator pedal signals disagree with each other

Brake pedal position / accelerator pedal position incompatible

Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected

The cited reports describe stalling, limp mode and one uncommanded acceleration event, but no source grades the code, so the class is not verified.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Inspect soon if the engine stalls, goes into limp mode, or the car will not accelerate until restarted. Owner complaints for a 2004 Ram 1500 and a 2012 Mazda2 describe exactly this.

P2299 in short

P2299 is set when the brake pedal switch and accelerator pedal sensor report conflicting information, such as both pedals pressed at once. Wiring, the brake switch, the pedal sensor or outdated software can be behind it. If the engine stalls or will not accelerate, have it checked promptly.

Engine computers watch the brake pedal switch and the accelerator pedal sensor together. When the accelerator is pressed hard while the brake is also reported as applied, the computer cuts or limits power. P2299 records that conflict.

The cause can be on either side: a brake switch that reports pressed when it is not, an accelerator sensor with a bad signal, or wiring between them. FCA has a bulletin that reprograms the PCM for P2299 on 2016 Durango and Grand Cherokee, and lists it in other flashes for Ram, Fiat 500, Charger, Challenger and Cherokee.

A dealer in one 2004 Ram complaint checked the brake switch and pedal sensor and found both normal, and a software bulletin did not stop the stalling, so some cases remain unresolved after the first steps.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Powertrain computer software that needs an update (some FCA vehicles)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
FCA bulletin 18-049-16 lists P2299 on 2016 Durango and Grand Cherokee and prescribes a PCM reprogram; several other FCA flashes list it too. The 2004 Ram owner shows the update does not always cure it.
    What would change this
Rises if the VIN is in a bulletin range and the software is not current. Falls if it is current and the code returns.
How to test the engine control module (ecm / pcm)
  2. Cause 2: Brake pedal position switch or its adjustment

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net names the BPP switch first among probable causes, and one dealer in a complaint tested it because of this code.
    What would change this
Rises if the brake lights or the scan-tool brake status do not match the pedal. Falls if the switch status tracks the pedal.
  3. Cause 3: Accelerator pedal position sensor

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net lists the APP sensor as a probable cause. Several complaints describe no acceleration or high idle that fits a bad pedal signal, though none confirms the part.
    What would change this
Rises if the pedal position reading is erratic. Falls if it moves smoothly with the pedal.
How to test the accelerator pedal position sensor
  4. Cause 4: Wiring fault, or added hand controls that can press both pedals

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net lists wiring. A Caravan owner with hand controls reports that the code set after both brake and throttle could be used together.
    What would change this
Rises if wiring is damaged or the vehicle has aftermarket controls. Falls if the harness is intact.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: With a scan tool, watch the brake switch status and the pedal position values while pressing and releasing each pedal; confirm the brake lights come on and go off.

    Low riskTool: scan tool

  2. Step 2: Watch the accelerator pedal position values on the scan tool through the full pedal travel, looking for dropouts or jumps.

    Low riskTool: scan tool

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Engine will not accelerate until restarted Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Limp mode or high idle Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Stalling Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

P2299 questions

Why does the engine stall with P2299?

The computer limits power when the brake and accelerator signals conflict. The cited complaints show that can end in stalling, so have it checked.
