P2227: The engine computer sees a barometric pressure reading that does not fit the engine load and throttle opening

Barometric pressure sensor range or performance

P2227 in short

P2227 means the engine computer thinks the barometric pressure reading is out of range or does not fit load and throttle. Causes include wiring, a barometric or MAP sensor, a dirty MAF, or on GM turbo engines a charge air cooler with water or ice. Get it checked promptly, and stop if power drops.

Many engines read outside air pressure with a barometric sensor, or use the MAP sensor with the key on. The computer cross-checks that reading against throttle opening and load.

When it does not fit, P2227 sets. TroubleCodes.net lists wiring, a bad barometric or MAP sensor, a contaminated MAF sensor and engine mechanical issues.

Manufacturers have bulletins too. GM ties it to water or icing in the charge air cooler on turbo Equinox, Terrain, Cruze, Silverado and Sierra, and lists ECM reprogramming for the Corvette. FCA lists PCM reprogramming for 2015 Challenger, Charger and 300 V8s.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Water or ice in the charge air cooler (GM turbo engines)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Three GM bulletins name charge air cooler moisture or icing with P2227, and two Equinox and Malibu owners report it with P0299 and limp mode.
    What would change this
Likelier on a GM turbo car with P0299, rough running or power loss in cold, humid weather.
  2. Cause 2: Engine computer software

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
FCA and GM bulletins address P2227 with PCM or ECM reprogramming on 2015 Challenger, Charger, 300 and Corvette.
    What would change this
Likelier on those models when no sensor or wiring fault is found.
How to test the engine control module (ecm / pcm)
  3. Cause 3: Barometric or MAP sensor, or its wiring

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net lists wiring and connectors and the barometric or MAP sensor first.
    What would change this
Likelier if sensor voltage is out of line with outside air pressure with the engine off.
  4. Cause 4: Contaminated MAF sensor

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net lists it. One owner replaced the MAF and MAP without curing the GM turbo power loss.
    What would change this
Likelier with a dirty element and other airflow codes.
How to test the mass airflow (maf) sensor

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes and freeze frame; compare the key-on barometric or MAP reading with local air pressure

Low riskTool: Scan tool with live data

  2. Step 2: Inspect the charge air cooler and intake tube for water, and check software update status

Low riskTool: Visual inspection, dealer software lookup

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Reduced engine power Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Hesitation on acceleration
  • Higher fuel use
  • Stalling Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Check for water in the intake after driving in cold, wet weather, and clear any debris from the MAF and air intake.
