P203F: Diesel exhaust fluid level in the tank is too low

Reductant level too low

Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected

The sources read give no driving-risk rating. Kelley Blue Book mentions a possible derated or no-start condition, so refill DEF promptly rather than running the tank dry.

P203F in short

P203F means the engine computer thinks the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) level in the tank is too low. The usual cause is simply low DEF, but wrong fluid, a bad level sensor, wiring or software can set it. It applies to diesels with an SCR system. Refill with correct DEF.

Diesel trucks with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) use DEF to cut nitrogen oxides. A level sensor in the tank tells the computer how much is left.

P203F sets when the reported level is too low. Ram bulletin 18-034-21 pairs it with P203E (level sensor circuit intermittent) for diagnosing DEF problems in extreme cold.

Kelley Blue Book warns of a DEF warning light and possibly a derated or no-start condition if it is ignored.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: DEF tank actually low

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Kelley Blue Book lists insufficient DEF first; the code definition itself is a low level.
    What would change this
Rises if the gauge shows low or the tank is nearly empty. Falls if the tank is full.
  2. Cause 2: Wrong fluid in the tank

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Kelley Blue Book lists incorrect DEF type as a cause.
    What would change this
Rises if something other than DEF was added. Falls if only DEF has ever been used.
  3. Cause 3: Faulty reductant level sensor or its wiring

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Kelley Blue Book lists a faulty level sensor and damaged wiring. Ram bulletin 18-034-21 pairs P203F with P203E, the level sensor circuit code, on 2019-2021 Ram Heavy Duty trucks.
    What would change this
Rises if the tank is full but the code remains, or P203E is also stored. Falls if the sensor reading tracks the real level.
  4. Cause 4: Condition covered by Ram 18-034-21 (extreme cold weather DEF diagnosis)

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
The summary says the bulletin gives additional diagnostic information for DEF issues in extreme cold, but it does not say what the repair is.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered Ram in very cold weather. Falls in warm weather or on other vehicles.
  5. Cause 5: Engine computer software

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
Kelley Blue Book lists software updates; Ram 18-019-20 lists P203F among codes in a diagnostic and system improvement bulletin, but the summary does not state the repair.
    What would change this
Rises if a dealer finds an update for your VIN. Falls if software is current.
How to test the engine control module (ecm / pcm)

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Check the DEF gauge and the tank. Refill with DEF that meets the vehicle's specification if low.

Low riskTool: DEF gauge or visual check

  2. Step 2: Read all codes. Note P203E or other SCR codes stored with P203F.

    Low riskTool: OBD-II scan tool

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • DEF warning light
  • Reduced engine power on some trucks

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Check the DEF level and refill with correct DEF if low.

  2. Step 2: If the tank is full and the code returns, ask a dealer whether a bulletin or software update applies to your VIN.

P203F questions

Is P203F just an empty DEF tank?

Often it is, since the code means the level is too low. If the tank is full and it returns, a level sensor, wiring or software fault is possible.
