P182E: Internal mode switch reports an invalid range in a GM automatic transmission
GM P182E internal mode switch invalid range
Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected
Owners report limp mode and the transmission acting as if in neutral while driving with this code, but we found no source on how long it is safe to drive.
It gets more serious if:
- Inspect soon: The transmission drops into neutral, goes into limp mode or the gear indicator disappears.
P182E in short
On Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles, P182E means the internal mode switch is reporting an invalid gear range to the transmission computer. A shift cable that is out of adjustment or a faulty mode switch inside the transmission are the usual causes. Owners report limp mode, so get it checked soon.
The internal mode switch is bolted to the shift cable and tells the transmission computer whether the lever is in park, reverse, neutral or drive. If its signals match no valid position, the computer stores P182E.
A repair writer ties P182E to GM bulletin 17-NA-084 and lists an out-of-adjustment shift cable or a faulty switch as the causes. The switch sits inside the transmission, so replacing it is a shop job. GM bulletin 17-NA-084 covers a procedure for completing the circuit and system verification steps.
Owner complaints on Traverse, Equinox, Enclave and Sierra models describe the check engine light, limp mode and the transmission acting as if in neutral, often with P0700 stored too. Because of that, do not rely on clearing the code.
Pick your make
P182E is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.
Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Faulty internal mode switch inside the transmission
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- A repair writer says a bad internal mode switch is the usual cause and the GM bulletin covers P182E; the bulletin itself was only read as a summary.
- What would change this
- Rises if live range data disagrees with the lever position. Falls if the switch signals match each lever position.
Cause 2: Shift cable out of adjustment
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- The switch is moved by the shift cable, so a poorly adjusted cable can feed it an invalid position, per the repair writer.
- What would change this
- Rises if the lever and displayed gear disagree. Falls if the cable is correctly adjusted and the code returns.
Cause 3: Transmission computer fault
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- One shop quoted the switch and the computer together on a Traverse; no source says the computer is a common cause.
- What would change this
- Rises only after the switch and cable test good. Falls if the switch is at fault.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all codes and freeze-frame data, and note whether P0700 or C0561 are stored with P182E.
IfP0700 is stored too
It meansThe computer asked for the check engine light because of a transmission fault; continue with the switch and cable.
IfP182E is the only code
It meansCheck the cable and switch.
Step 2: Have a shop check the shift cable adjustment and compare the gear range shown by the scan tool with the lever position.
Warning:The switch is inside the transmission, so the work is for a shop.
IfRange data disagrees with the lever
It meansAdjust or fix the cable, then look at the switch.
IfCable is correct and range data still disagrees
It meansThe internal mode switch is the likely fault.
Points to: Faulty internal mode switch inside the transmission
IfSwitch and cable test good
It meansLook at the computer.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, sometimes flashing briefly
- No gear indicator (PRNDL) display or hard shifting
- Limp mode or neutral-like feel while driving Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
Compare with: Check engine light with loss of power
How to fix
Step 1: Do not clear the code and drive on; have the shift cable and mode switch checked first.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):The mode switch and cable are cheaper checks than the computer.
Labor varies by vehicle and shop; get a quote before you approve a repair.
