P1715: Input (primary) speed sensor signal fault in a Nissan or Infiniti automatic or CVT
Nissan P1715 input speed sensor
Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected
Owners report lost power, hesitation and limp mode with this code, but we found no source that says how far the vehicle can safely be driven.
It gets more serious if:
- Inspect soon: The vehicle hesitates, loses power, revs without speeding up or goes into limp mode.
P1715 in short
On Nissan and Infiniti, P1715 means the transmission computer sees a bad signal from the input (primary) speed sensor. It often appears with P0776 on CVT models, where Nissan bulletins cover hesitation and lost power. We could not verify how far it is safe to drive, so get it scanned soon.
The transmission computer compares the speed at the transmission input with the engine speed and the output speed. When the input speed sensor signal does not make sense, it stores P1715.
A reference list calls it the input shaft speed sensor on Nissan and the turbine shaft speed sensor on Infiniti. A Nissan bulletin lists it as input speed sensor among speed codes, where moisture at the secondary speed sensor pins was the cause on a 2014 Rogue.
On 2013-2019 Altima, Rogue, Sentra and NV200 CVTs, Nissan bulletins list P1715 together with P0776 and judder codes. Owners with the code often had a valve body repair or CVT work, so a new sensor alone may not fix it.
Pick your make
P1715 is a manufacturer-specific code: its meaning depends on who built the car.
Other makes: meaning not verified. Check with a scan tool that reads manufacturer definitions.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Speed sensor, its connector or moisture at the sensor pins
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- A Nissan bulletin ties P1715 and other speed codes to moisture or corrosion at the secondary speed sensor pins, and two owners had speed sensors replaced.
- What would change this
- Rises if the connector is wet or corroded, or the sensor reading drops out. Falls if the signal is clean.
Cause 2: CVT valve body or pressure solenoid problem
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Several Nissan bulletins pair P1715 with P0776, and a Rogue owner was told the bulletin called for a valve body and reprogramming.
- What would change this
- Rises if P0776 is stored too and the vehicle hesitates. Falls if P1715 is the only code, since one bulletin excludes that case.
Cause 3: Sensor burned or rubbed because of poor spacing
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- One owner was told two sensors burned or rubbed from improper spacing; it is a single report.
- What would change this
- Rises if the sensor shows wear marks. Falls if it looks clean.
Cause 4: Transmission computer or network fault
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- One dealer scan listed P1715 with a network code and a computer that was not sending a signal.
- What would change this
- Rises if network codes are also stored. Falls if the network tests good.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all codes and note whether P0776, P1574 or P0720 are stored with P1715.
IfP0776 is stored with P1715 on a CVT
It meansThe CVT hydraulic side is suspect; check for the Nissan bulletin repair.
IfP1574 or P0720 speed codes are stored with P1715
It meansThe speed sensors or their wiring are suspect.
IfP1715 is the only code
It meansCheck the sensor and connector first.
Step 2: Ask a Nissan dealer whether a bulletin for this model and year applies to the stored codes.
IfA bulletin applies
It meansFollow its repair flow.
IfNo bulletin applies
It meansCheck the sensor circuit.
Step 3: Have the speed sensors, connectors and wiring inspected for moisture, corrosion, wear marks and a clean signal.
Warning:The sensors sit on or in the transmission; a shop should do the work.
IfMoisture, corrosion or a bad signal
It meansDry or repair the connector and replace the sensor.
Points to: Speed sensor, its connector or moisture at the sensor pins
IfSensor shows wear marks
It meansCheck the spacing.
IfSensors and wiring test good
It meansTest the network and computer.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hesitation or lack of power Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Limp mode or revs rising without speed Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
Compare with: Check engine light with loss of power
How to fix
Step 1: Do not clear the code before a shop has read it; the stored data helps decide between a sensor and the CVT hydraulics.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):A new sensor alone may not fix the code on CVTs that also store P0776; ask for the diagnosis first.
Labor varies by vehicle and shop; get a quote before you approve a repair.
