P0E15: The heater that warms the hybrid battery's coolant is not doing what the hybrid computer commands

Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Coolant Heater A Control Performance

P0E15 in short

P0E15 means the electric heater that warms the hybrid battery's coolant is not working as commanded. On the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid and Jeep Wrangler 4xe, bulletins point to control software updates or a failed heater. Expect lost electric mode or heat. Get it to a dealer soon; this high-voltage part is not DIY.

Plug-in hybrids keep the high-voltage battery in a narrow temperature range. In cold weather an electric coolant heater, powered by the high-voltage battery, warms the coolant that flows through the pack. P0E15 sets when the hybrid computer commands that heater but does not see it respond as expected.

On the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid, Chrysler has issued control software updates for the hybrid control processors that list P0E15, most recently a 2026 series covering 2017–2026 models. Those bulletins describe no start or long cranking, the engine running just to make cabin heat, and loss of heat. Owners also report dealers replacing the heater itself.

On the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Jeep bulletins describe electric mode becoming unavailable with the engine running all the time, and one gives a newer heater part number for P0E15.

The heater runs on the high-voltage system. The orange cables and connectors are not for owners to touch or probe. Diagnosis belongs with a dealer or a hybrid-trained technician.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Hybrid control processor software (Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Chrysler bulletins for every Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid model year from 2017 to 2026 list P0E15 and call for reprogramming the hybrid control processors first.
    What would change this
Rises if the dealer finds the software update has not been done. Falls if the latest software is already installed and the code comes back.
  2. Cause 2: Failed battery coolant heater

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Jeep's bulletin for the Wrangler 4xe gives a newer heater part number for P0E15, and several Pacifica owners report dealers replacing the heater.
    What would change this
Rises if the code returns after the software update or the dealer's heater tests fail. Falls if the code clears for good after the update.
  3. Cause 3: Heater wiring or another high-voltage module fault

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
The code title covers the heater's control circuit. Jeep lists P0E15 with network codes U1008 and U1124 and as active after high-voltage module updates, so the fault can sit outside the heater.
    What would change this
Rises if network (U) codes are stored too. Falls if the heater alone tests bad.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all stored codes with a scan tool and write down any dashboard messages, such as electric mode being unavailable. Do not open or unplug anything under the hood.

    Low riskTool: OBD-II scan tool

    • IfP0E15 is stored on a Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid or Wrangler 4xe

It meansBulletins exist for this code on these models.

      Go to step 2

    • IfP0E15 is stored with network (U) codes

It meansA communication fault may be involved.

      Go to step 2

    • IfThe vehicle is a different hybrid

It meansWe found no bulletin; it needs the maker's diagnosis.

      Go to step 3

  2. Step 2: Give the VIN to a dealer and ask which hybrid control processor updates and P0E15 bulletins are outstanding. On a Pacifica, also ask about open high-voltage battery recalls.

Low riskTool: VIN lookup at a dealer

  3. Step 3: Have a dealer or hybrid-trained technician run the coolant heater diagnostics in the service information.

Best left to a shopTool: factory scan tool and high-voltage safety equipment

Warning:High voltage: the battery pack, inverter, motors and orange cables carry hundreds of volts that can kill. Do not unplug, probe or touch them. This work needs a hybrid-trained technician who makes the system safe first.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Electric mode unavailable; the engine runs all the time
  • Reduced or no cabin heat
  • No start or long cranking
  • A message that the vehicle is shutting down Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

P0E15 questions

Is it safe to drive with P0E15?

Usually yes, to get it to a dealer, since the engine keeps running. Stop and have it towed if the dash says the vehicle is shutting down.

Can I fix P0E15 myself?

No. The heater runs on the high-voltage system and needs a dealer or hybrid-trained technician.

Why is electric mode off on my Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid?

With P0E15 stored, owners and Chrysler bulletins report electric mode disabled and the engine running for heat until the fault is fixed.
