P0AA2: The hybrid or EV battery computer sees the positive high-voltage contactor stuck open, so the battery cannot power the car
Hybrid battery positive contactor stuck open
Severity: Inspect soon
Owner reports on Mustang Mach-E and Focus Electric describe a Stop Safely Now message and total loss of power on the road; the contactor is part of the high-voltage battery.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Stop somewhere safe and arrange a tow if a Stop Safely message appears or power drops. Owners report losing all power on a freeway and cars that will not restart.
P0AA2 in short
P0AA2 means the hybrid or EV battery computer reports the positive contactor, the high-voltage switch in the battery, stuck open, so it cannot feed the car. Ford ties it on the Mustang Mach-E to the high voltage battery junction box. Owners report Stop Safely Now and lost power, so stop if that happens.
The positive contactor is a heavy relay that connects the high-voltage battery to the rest of the car. When the battery computer commands it closed but it stays open, it sets P0AA2 and the car cannot draw battery power.
Ford bulletins TSB 22-2178, 23-2257 and 24-2163 cover 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E with a MIL or Stop Safely Now and P0AA2 with related codes such as P0AA1 and P0AA4. They say it may be due to the high voltage battery junction box and replace the box and reprogram the BECM. We read only the bulletin summaries.
Owner complaints show the same code on a 2017 Focus Electric, where the BECM stored it with a battery system voltage code and a lost communication code after power was lost while driving.
The contactors are part of the high-voltage system. Orange cables and connectors are not for owners to touch. Diagnosis belongs with a dealer or an EV trained technician.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: High voltage battery junction box (Mustang Mach-E)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford TSB 22-2178, 23-2257 and 24-2163 list P0AA2 among codes that may come from the high voltage battery junction box and replace it; complaint ODI 11539803 reports the same diagnosis on a 2021 car.
- What would change this
- Rises on a 2021-2022 Mach-E with Stop Safely Now. Falls if the VIN is outside the bulletin range.
Cause 2: Battery energy control module software or fault
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- The same Ford bulletins reprogram the BECM along with the junction box, and a dealer in complaint ODI 11459637 said a BECM was also needed; the cause behind the code is not confirmed in our sources.
- What would change this
- Rises if reprogramming is part of an open bulletin for the VIN. Falls if the junction box test already explains the code.
Cause 3: Other contactor or battery system fault (Focus Electric and others)
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- A 2017 Focus Electric stored P0AA2 with P0AF8 and U0111 after losing power; no bulletin in our sources covers it, so the cause needs testing.
- What would change this
- Rises if no bulletin applies and the contactor fails the maker tests. Falls if a bulletin fix clears the code.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data with a scan tool and note every dashboard message. Do not open or unplug anything.
IfP0AA2 is stored on a Mach-E with Stop Safely Now
It meansFord bulletins on the junction box may apply.
IfIt is stored on any other EV or hybrid
It meansThe maker diagnosis decides.
Step 2: Give the VIN to a dealer and ask for open bulletins, recalls and programs for the high voltage battery junction box and the BECM.
IfA Mach-E is covered
It meansThe junction box is replaced and the BECM reprogrammed.
Points to: High voltage battery junction box (Mustang Mach-E)
IfNothing applies
It meansIt needs a full diagnosis.
Step 3: Have a dealer or EV trained technician check the contactor, the junction box and the battery computer using the maker service information.
Warning:High voltage: the battery pack, junction box, inverter and orange cables carry hundreds of volts that can kill. Do not unplug, probe or touch them. This work needs a hybrid or EV trained technician who makes the system safe first.
IfThe junction box fails its tests
It meansThe box is replaced under the maker procedure.
Points to: High voltage battery junction box (Mustang Mach-E)
IfThe junction box passes
It meansThe module or another part needs testing.
Points to: Other contactor or battery system fault (Focus Electric and others)
Symptoms
- Stop Safely Now message Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Loss of power while driving Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Car will not start or go into Ready
- Charge fault or low 12-volt warning
How to fix
This is a safety-critical system, so we explain the code but don't give repair steps. Have it inspected by a qualified technician.

P0AA2 questions
Is it safe to drive with P0AA2?
Only if the car drives normally, and only to get it checked. If a Stop Safely message appears or power drops, stop somewhere safe and arrange a tow.
Is the junction box covered on my Mach-E?
Possibly. Ford bulletins cover 2021-2022 Mach-E built before set dates. Give the VIN to a dealer to check.
