P0975: Shift solenoid B control circuit out of range or performing poorly

Shift solenoid B control circuit range/performance

P0975 in short

P0975 means the transmission computer found shift solenoid B not performing as expected. Chrysler fixes some cases with a software update, and Ford dealers replaced the solenoid or control assembly. A fail-safe gear, harsh shifts or a stall can follow. Get it inspected soon, and stop driving if the vehicle loses drive.

The transmission computer commands shift solenoid B and checks that the response matches. P0975 is set when the solenoid circuit is working outside the range the computer expects, which can be the solenoid, the wiring or the computer itself.

On 2015 Chrysler 200 and Jeep Cherokee, a bulletin reprograms the transmission computer for a list of codes that includes P0975. One Cherokee owner saw the codes return after both updates. Land Rover traces a gearbox fault message with several codes, including P0975, to a faulty crimp in the internal harness.

Ford owners report P0975 with sudden loss of drive and a skid on an F-150 (the control assembly replaced) and an Expedition (the SSE solenoid replaced), and a Pacifica owner had a stall fixed by reprogramming.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Transmission computer software

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Chrysler 21-021-15 Rev E reprograms the TCM for a list of codes including P0975, and a Pacifica stall was fixed by reprogramming. One Cherokee owner saw the codes return after two updates.
    What would change this
Rises if a dealer finds an open update. Falls if the software is current or the code returns after an update.

  2. Cause 2: Shift solenoid B or the solenoid and control assembly

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford dealers replaced the SSE solenoid on an Expedition and the control assembly on an F-150 with P0975 stored. TroubleCodes.net lists solenoid failure as the most common cause.
    What would change this
Rises if solenoid resistance is out of specification or the code returns after software. Falls if the solenoid tests normal.
  3. Cause 3: Faulty crimp in the internal transmission harness (Range Rover)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Land Rover LTB00740 names a faulty crimp in the internal harness for a gearbox fault message with P0975-19 and other codes.
    What would change this
Rises on a 2014-2015 Range Rover or Evoque showing the gearbox fault message. Falls on other vehicles.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes from the transmission module and note any U0402 or other solenoid codes stored with P0975.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads the transmission module

    • IfSeveral solenoid codes are stored

It meansCheck for an update that lists them.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open transmission software update or bulletin for P0975.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Have the solenoid B resistance, wiring and internal harness tested.

Best left to a shopTool: multimeter, scan tool

Warning:The pan and harness are under the vehicle and the fluid can be hot. Leave this to a shop.

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light
  • Fail-safe mode with limited gears
  • Harsh shifts or unusually high revs
  • Stall or sudden loss of drive Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Ask a dealer whether a transmission software update applies to your VIN for P0975.
