P0883: The transmission control module's power input voltage is too high
TCM power input signal high
Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected
TroubleCodes.net says an active code can put the transmission in limp mode, and an Allison bulletin says the transmission may shift into neutral while driving, but we found no source that rates how long you can drive, so we do not rate it.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: The transmission shifts into neutral or loses drive while you are moving. An Allison bulletin summary says this code can cause a shift into neutral while driving; pull over safely and do not keep driving.
P0883 in short
P0883 means the transmission control module is seeing too much voltage on its power input. TroubleCodes.net points first to an overcharging alternator, then to rubbed or corroded wiring, damaged connector pins, or a faulty computer. Jeep has bulletins for it on the 2023 Compass, and Allison warns of a shift to neutral.
The transmission control module (TCM) monitors the supply voltage it receives. P0883 sets when that voltage is higher than expected, so the fault may be the supply or the wiring, not the module.
TroubleCodes.net starts with the charging system, since an alternator that overcharges is the main cause, then wiring faults and connector pins at the PCM or TIPM, and last the PCM. It says an active code can leave the transmission in limp mode and not shifting.
Owners link it to electrical faults: a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan owner had P0883 with P0685 (ASD relay circuit) and flickering lights and believes the TIPM was at fault. Jeep's 2023 Compass bulletins cover a TCM software update and a harness rubbing on a sharp PCM edge. An Allison Transmission bulletin warns that with P0883 the transmission may shift into neutral while driving.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Alternator overcharging
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net says high voltage codes typically come from the alternator overcharging and tells you to test the charging system first.
- What would change this
- Rises if running battery voltage is above the normal charging range. Falls if charging voltage is normal.
Cause 2: Rubbed, broken or corroded transmission wiring or damaged connector pins
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net lists wiring and connector pin damage, and Jeep's 2023 Compass bulletin lists P0883 among the codes set by harness wiring rubbing on a sharp PCM edge.
- What would change this
- Rises if the harness shows a rub-through or the connector pins are bent or corroded. Falls if wiring and pins are intact.
Cause 3: TCM software that needs updating (2023 Jeep Compass)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Jeep bulletin 2103023 says P0883 is addressed by reprogramming the TCM on the 2023 Compass.
- What would change this
- Rises if a dealer finds your VIN covered and the TCM is not at the latest software. Falls if it is already current.
Cause 4: TIPM or PCM fault
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net lists the PCM last, and a Grand Caravan owner reports P0883 with an ASD relay code and flickering lights and suspects the TIPM. The owner's cause was not confirmed.
- What would change this
- Rises if the charging system and wiring test good and other power-distribution codes are stored. Falls if a charging or wiring fault is found.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all stored codes and note any ASD relay, TIPM or other voltage codes stored with P0883.
IfOther power-distribution or voltage codes are stored
It meansSuspect the charging system or power distribution first.
IfP0883 is the only code
It meansStart with the charging system anyway.
Step 2: Measure battery voltage with the engine running and compare it with the normal charging range.
Warning:Keep hands, clothing and tools clear of the belt and fan with the engine running, and do not short the battery terminals.
IfVoltage is above the normal charging range
It meansThe alternator or its regulator is overcharging.
IfVoltage is normal
It meansCheck bulletins and the transmission wiring.
Step 3: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a TCM update or a wiring repair bulletin for P0883.
IfAn update applies and the TCM is not current
It meansReprogram the TCM before replacing parts.
Points to: TCM software that needs updating (2023 Jeep Compass)
IfNo bulletin applies
It meansHave the wiring inspected.
Step 4: Have a shop inspect the transmission harness for rub-through and the TCM, PCM and TIPM connectors for bent pins, corrosion or moisture.
Warning:Probing live control module connectors can short pins and damage the module; leave this to a shop.
IfRubbed wiring or damaged pins are found
It meansRepair the harness or connector.
Points to: Rubbed, broken or corroded transmission wiring or damaged connector pins
IfWiring and charging both test good
It meansA TIPM or PCM fault is possible.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Transmission in limp mode and not shifting Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Harsh gear engagement
- Transmission shifts into neutral while driving Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Have the battery and alternator output tested, and have the transmission harness and TCM connectors inspected for rubbed wiring or damaged pins.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a TCM software update or a wiring bulletin for P0883.
