P0810: Clutch position control error

Clutch position control error

P0810 in short

P0810 means the transmission computer found a clutch position control error. On Honda and Jeep automatics it is tied to the transmission computer, and Jeep bulletins fix it with a software update. Some vehicles lose drive until a key cycle. Have it checked soon, and stop if it loses drive.

On a manual car this code name refers to the clutch position sensor. On the Honda and Jeep automatics in our sources, the transmission computer sets the same code when its control of a clutch does not match what it commanded. Jeep plug-in hybrids use a clutch called K0 that connects the engine.

Jeep has published many bulletins that reprogram the transmission computer for P0810 on Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and Wrangler 4xe models; the 4xe bulletin says the update modifies the P0810 set parameters, and the symptoms include loss of propulsion that a key cycle clears. Honda owners report dealers replacing the transmission computer on 2019 Pilot and Passport.

A Cherokee owner reports the update lasted a week before the code returned. When software does not hold, the dealer may look at the module or the transmission.

  3. Cause 3: Shifter position signal problem

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
A 2014 Cherokee owner says the computer appeared confused about the shifter position, but the update only lasted a week and no part was named.
    What would change this
Rises if the display shows the wrong gear or the shifter message is wrong. Falls if the shifter position reads correctly.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all stored codes with a scan tool that reads the transmission module, and note whether a service transmission light or loss of drive happened.
