P0752: Shift solenoid A stuck on
Shift solenoid A stuck on
Severity: Inspect soon
Toyota tells owners to have the car inspected right away when the check engine light comes on for the automatic transmission, and Kelley Blue Book rates P0752 as extremely serious because the transmission can hold one gear or shift harshly.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The transmission goes into limp-home mode (stuck in one gear, little power) or the vehicle will not move. Regulations require the light in limp-home mode, but we found no source saying whether you must stop
P0752 in short
P0752 means the transmission computer thinks shift solenoid A is stuck on, so the gear it controls stays applied. Expect harsh shifts, a stuck gear or limp mode. Low or dirty fluid, the solenoid or valve body, and wiring are common causes. Have it inspected soon, and do not keep driving if the car loses drive.
Shift solenoids are electrically switched valves that send fluid to the clutches for each gear. P0752 sets when the computer commands solenoid A off but the gear ratio or pressure still behaves as if it were on, so it decides the solenoid or its valve is stuck on.
A stuck solenoid is often mechanical: dirty fluid, debris or a worn valve body can hold the valve open. Wiring faults can also make a solenoid look stuck. Which gears solenoid A affects depends on the transmission.
Dealers have fixed P0752 by replacing a solenoid, the valve body or the transmission computer, and Ford and GM bulletins list it with harsh or delayed shifts on some transmissions.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Shift solenoid A or valve body sticking
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Code references list the solenoid and valve body, and a dealer replaced the valve body for P0752 on a 2026 Crosstrek because the solenoid was not sold separately.
- What would change this
- Rises if the solenoid does not respond when commanded or debris is found in the valve body.
Cause 2: Low, dirty or wrong transmission fluid or a clogged filter
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Dirty fluid and a clogged filter are listed causes and can make a solenoid valve stick.
- What would change this
- Rises if the fluid is low, dark, burnt-smelling or full of debris.
Cause 3: Solenoid wiring or connector fault
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Wiring and connectors are listed causes for solenoid codes.
- What would change this
- Rises if the connector is damaged or the circuit fails a shop check.
Cause 4: Transmission computer fault or outdated software (some GM and Ford models)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- A GMC dealer replaced the transmission computer for P0752 on a 2008 Acadia, a Saturn Outlook dealer blamed the module, and Ford covers P0752 on the 10R80 with a bulletin.
- What would change this
- Rises on a GM Lambda crossover (Acadia, Outlook) or a 10R80 Ford with other module codes such as P0700.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared.
IfOther solenoid or module codes are stored with P0752
It meansSeveral codes together can point to wiring, power or the computer.
IfP0752 alone
It meansLook for a bulletin, then check the fluid.
Step 2: Check for a P0752 bulletin for your VIN at a dealer or on the NHTSA site.
IfA 2017–2023 Ford with the 10R80 10-speed and harsh or delayed shifts
It meansFord has a bulletin for this.
Points to: Transmission computer fault or outdated software (some GM and Ford models)
IfA GM car with the 4T40-E or 4T45-E transaxle
It meansGM has valve body reconditioning information.
IfNo bulletin applies
It meansCheck the fluid, then have a shop test the solenoid.
Step 3: Have a shop check the fluid, then command solenoid A with a scan tool and test its circuit.
Warning:Shop test. It needs the maker's wiring diagram, pressure specs and test procedure.
IfThe fluid is low, burnt or full of debris
It meansFluid condition may be holding the valve.
Points to: Low, dirty or wrong transmission fluid or a clogged filter
IfThe circuit is open or shorted
It meansRepair the wiring.
IfThe circuit is good but the gear stays applied
It meansThe solenoid or valve body is the likely fault.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Stuck in one gear, or will not shift out of first
- Sudden loss of acceleration or limp-home mode Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read; the stored data helps the shop.
Step 2: Check the transmission fluid level and condition if your transmission has a dipstick or the owner's manual describes a check, and look for leaks under the car.
Step 3: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open P0752 bulletin or software update.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):Some dealers replaced the transmission computer for P0752, but rule out fluid, wiring and the solenoid or valve body first unless a bulletin points to the module.
