P0747: Pressure control solenoid A stuck on
Pressure control solenoid A stuck on
Severity: Inspect soon
Toyota tells owners to have the car inspected right away when the check engine light comes on for the automatic transmission, and GM pairs this code with harsh shifting, reduced engine performance and a transmission stuck in default mode.
It gets more serious if:
- Not verified: The transmission goes into limp-home or default mode (stuck in one gear, little power) or will not shift. Regulations require the light in limp-home mode, but we found no source saying whether you must stop
P0747 in short
P0747 means the transmission computer sees pressure control solenoid A acting as if stuck on, so line pressure is not following its commands. On many 2019–2024 GM vehicles a worn control valve is to blame and GM offers extended coverage. Have it inspected soon and check your VIN.
Pressure control solenoid A sets the main hydraulic pressure that applies the clutches. The computer commands it and checks that pressure follows. P0747 sets when the pressure behaves as if the solenoid were stuck on, so the computer cannot lower it as commanded.
Most reports come from GM 8- and 10-speed trucks, SUVs and cars. GM says the transmission control valve can wear and slowly lose pressure, causing harsh shifting, a service engine soon message, reduced engine performance or P0747. It has special coverage of 15 years or 150,000 miles on many 2019–2022 models and a valve body bulletin for 2023–2024.
On GM crossovers, P0747 has also been traced to a clutch spring retaining ring not fully seated on some 2020–2021 models, and to a body computer or circuit fault when it sets at shutdown. A dealer VIN check is the first step.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Worn transmission control valve losing pressure (2019–2024 GM)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- GM special coverages and a service bulletin tie P0747 on many trucks, SUVs and cars to a worn control valve that gradually loses pressure.
- What would change this
- Rises on a covered GM vehicle with harsh shifting or reduced power.
Cause 2: Clutch spring retaining ring not fully seated (2020–2021 Equinox, Terrain, Blazer)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- GM says this build fault can set P0747 at low mileage and replaces the transmission if the inspection fails.
- What would change this
- Rises on a low-mileage covered crossover.
Cause 3: Body computer or circuit 5985 fault when the code sets at shutdown (2017–2019 GM)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- GM points to the body control module or circuit 5985 when P0747 sets at engine shutdown in park or neutral with no transmission symptoms.
- What would change this
- Rises if the code only sets at shutdown and the transmission drives normally.
Cause 4: Sticking solenoid or valve, or contaminated fluid
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- A stuck-on pressure fault means the valve does not release as commanded, which a sticking valve or debris can cause.
- What would change this
- Rises if the fluid is dark or contaminated.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared.
IfP0747 sets only at shutdown in park or neutral on a 2017–2019 GM crossover
It meansGM points to the body computer or a circuit, not the transmission.
Points to: Body computer or circuit 5985 fault when the code sets at shutdown (2017–2019 GM)
IfP0747 with harsh shifts or reduced power
It meansCheck for coverage or a bulletin.
Step 2: Ask a GM dealer, or check NHTSA, for special coverage or P0747 bulletins on your VIN.
IfA 2019–2022 GM truck, SUV, Camaro or Cadillac CT4/CT5/CT6, or a 2023–2024 truck or SUV
It meansGM covers or replaces the control valve.
Points to: Worn transmission control valve losing pressure (2019–2024 GM)
IfA 2020–2021 Equinox, Terrain or Blazer
It meansGM inspects the clutch spring retaining ring.
Points to: Clutch spring retaining ring not fully seated (2020–2021 Equinox, Terrain, Blazer)
IfNo coverage or bulletin applies
It meansA transmission shop needs to test it.
Step 3: Have a transmission shop check fluid condition and compare commanded and actual line pressure.
Warning:Shop test. Many transmissions have no dipstick and need the maker's fluid check procedure.
IfPressure does not follow the command
It meansThe valve body or solenoid is at fault.
Points to: Sticking solenoid or valve, or contaminated fluid
IfPressure follows the command and the code sets only at shutdown
It meansLook at the electrical side.
Points to: Body computer or circuit 5985 fault when the code sets at shutdown (2017–2019 GM)
Symptoms
- Check engine light or service engine soon message
- Harsh shifting
- Reduced engine performance Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Transmission not shifting or stuck in default mode Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
Compare with: Check engine light with loss of power
How to fix
Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read.
Step 2: Ask a GM dealer whether your VIN is covered by a P0747 special coverage. GM covers the repair for 15 years or 150,000 miles on many models.
Parts and cost context
- Transmission control module (TCM):On most GM vehicles the fix is the control valve body, not the computer. Check special coverage before paying for a repair.
