P0713: Transmission fluid temperature sensor A circuit, high input

Transmission fluid temperature sensor, high input

Source: how we rate severity

P0713 in short

P0713 means the transmission computer sees a very high signal from the fluid temperature sensor circuit. A short to positive voltage, a failed sensor or a module fault can cause it. We found no severity rating, so have a shop read the transmission module before relying on the car.

The fluid temperature sensor changes resistance with heat, and the computer reads that as a voltage. A high-input code means the signal sits above the expected range, which can be a fault in the sensor or its wiring, not necessarily hot fluid.

TroubleCodes.net lists a short to positive voltage, sensor failure and a module malfunction. Ford ties a flashing transmission lamp with P0713 on some 2002 Explorers to water in the solenoid body connector.

Kia published a bulletin telling technicians to replace the transaxle oil temperature sensor, not the transaxle, when P0711, P0712 or P0713 is present.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Short to voltage or damaged wiring in the sensor circuit

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net lists a short to positive voltage, and this is a circuit code.
    What would change this
Rises if the harness is chafed or the connector is corroded.
  2. Cause 2: Failed fluid temperature sensor

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net lists sensor failure, and Kia says to replace the sensor for this code on its 6-speed transaxles.
    What would change this
Rises if the wiring tests good.
  3. Cause 3: Water in the solenoid body connector (2002 Explorer/Mountaineer 5R55W)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford 01107 names P0713 as the most common code with water intrusion at this connector.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered vehicle with a flashing transmission lamp.
  4. Cause 4: TorqShift fault (2008-2011 Ford Super Duty and E-series)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
    Ford TSB 13-12-22 covers a MIL with P0713 and/or P0710.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered Ford with both codes stored.
  5. Cause 5: Transmission control module

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net lists a module malfunction; Mitsubishi reprograms the module for P0712 and P0713 on 2007 Outlanders.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered Outlander, or after the sensor and wiring are ruled out.
How to test the transmission control module (tcm)

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared. Note P0710-P0712 and any solenoid codes, and whether the transmission lamp flashes.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads the transmission module

  2. Step 2: Inspect the sensor and solenoid body connector and harness for chafing, corrosion and moisture.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Have a shop check the sensor resistance against the maker's temperature table and look at the reading on a scan tool.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool and multimeter

Warning:Shop test. It needs the maker's specifications.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or flashing transmission lamp
  • Harsh or late shifts Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Service required message

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open bulletin. Ford, Hyundai, Kia and Mitsubishi have published ones.

Parts and cost context

  • Transmission control module (TCM):Do not replace the module for P0713 unless tests point to it. Mitsubishi fixed some 2007 Outlanders with a software update.

P0713 questions

Does P0713 mean the fluid is overheating?

Not necessarily. It means the sensor signal is higher than expected, which can come from the sensor or its wiring as well as from the fluid itself.

Is P0713 serious?

We found no source that rates it. Have a shop read the transmission module and check the fluid.
