P0710: Transmission fluid temperature sensor A circuit fault

Transmission fluid temperature sensor A circuit

P0710 in short

P0710 means the transmission computer sees a fault in the circuit of the fluid temperature sensor, a thermistor it uses to adjust shifts and pressure. A failed sensor, damaged wiring or low fluid can set it. Shifts may turn harsh or late, so have it inspected soon.

The transmission computer reads fluid temperature through a sensor inside the transmission. It uses the reading to change shift timing and line pressure, and to protect the fluid from overheating. P0710 sets when that reading is missing, fixed or not believable.

TroubleCodes.net and Kelley Blue Book list the sensor, open or shorted wiring, poor connections and low fluid. Honda says its P0710 is an electrical fault that a mechanical transmission problem cannot cause.

Several makers publish bulletins. Nissan has one where P0710 is stored only in the engine module, and another where odd CVT fluid appears with P0840 and P0845. Ford has one for TorqShift trucks with P0713 or P0710.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Wiring or connector fault in the sensor circuit

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Both references list open or shorted wiring and poor connections, and this is a circuit code.
    What would change this
Rises if the harness is chafed or the connector is corroded or has fluid in it.
  2. Cause 2: Failed fluid temperature sensor

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Both references list the sensor, and Honda says the code comes from the sensor or its circuit.
    What would change this
Rises if the wiring tests good and the temperature reading is stuck or absurd.
  3. Cause 3: Low or degraded fluid

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
Kelley Blue Book lists low fluid, and Nissan ties odd-looking CVT fluid to this code on some 2007-2008 cars.
    What would change this
Rises if the fluid is low, discolored or smells burnt.
  4. Cause 4: TorqShift transmission fault (2008-2011 Ford Super Duty and E-series)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford TSB 13-12-22 covers a MIL with P0713 and/or P0710 on these trucks.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered Ford with both codes stored.
  5. Cause 5: Engine-module-only P0710 (2013 Nissan 370Z, Infiniti G37)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Nissan NTB13018A and Infiniti ITB13019A apply when P0710 is stored in the engine module only, and depend on the TCM part number.
    What would change this
Rises on a covered 2013 car where the transmission module has no code.
  6. Cause 6: Transmission control module

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net says a scan tool that reads the transmission module is needed; the module is an unlikely last resort.
    What would change this
Rises only after the sensor, wiring and fluid are ruled out.
How to test the transmission control module (tcm)

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read codes from the engine and transmission modules with a scan tool that supports both, before anything is cleared. Note whether P0710 is in one module or both, and any P0711-P0713 or pressure codes.

Low riskTool: scan tool that reads the transmission module

  2. Step 2: Check the fluid level and condition by the maker's method.

    Use caution

Warning:Many transmissions are sealed. Do not open the fill plug without the maker's procedure, because the level depends on temperature.

  3. Step 3: Inspect the sensor connector and harness for chafing, corrosion and fluid inside the plug.

    Low risk

  4. Step 4: Have a shop measure the sensor resistance and compare it with the maker's temperature table, and watch the temperature reading on a scan tool.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool and multimeter

Warning:Shop test. It needs the maker's specifications.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Harsh or delayed shifts
  • Limp mode Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Do not clear the code before the transmission module has been read.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open bulletin. Ford, Nissan, Honda and Acura have published ones.

Parts and cost context

  • Transmission control module (TCM):Do not replace the module for P0710 unless tests point to it. Nissan checks the TCM part number against a table in one bulletin.

P0710 questions

What is the transmission fluid temperature sensor?

It tells the transmission computer how hot the fluid is, so shift timing and pressure can be adjusted. P0710 means its circuit reads wrong.

Can I drive with P0710?

Have it inspected soon. Kelley Blue Book rates it serious and warns that driving on risks overheated fluid.
