P06DA: Oil pressure control solenoid circuit open or high resistance
Engine oil pressure control circuit open
Severity: Inspect soon
P06DA is an electrical fault in the circuit that lets the engine computer vary oil pressure; the engine usually runs normally, but get it diagnosed soon because oil pressure control is affected and some GM wiring faults also cause stalling.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Stop the engine if the oil pressure warning comes on or the engine starts ticking, rattling or knocking.
- Stop: Stop if the engine stalls or loses power. GM links P06DA with a crank-no-start or stall from a chafed harness on some V8s, and on the Chevrolet Volt it appears with a blown fuse and a stall.
P06DA in short
P06DA means the engine computer found an open or high-resistance circuit to the oil pressure control solenoid, the valve it uses to raise or lower oil pressure. Damaged wiring or a connector is the most common cause, then the solenoid itself. Check the oil level, then have it diagnosed soon; stop if the oil warning comes on.
Many newer engines have an oil pump whose output the engine computer can change through a control solenoid. The computer drives the solenoid and checks the circuit; P06DA sets when the circuit looks open or has too much resistance.
Makers' bulletins mostly point at wiring: a chafed or pinched harness on GM V8 trucks, a damaged solenoid connector on the 2024 Ford Ranger, and an engine room sub-harness on Infiniti Q50 and Q60. On the Chevrolet Volt, a shorted EGR valve that blows a shared fuse sets P06DA with many other codes.
P06DA is about the electrical control, not a measured oil pressure reading. Related codes P06DB and P06DC cover the circuit low and high; P06DD means oil pressure did not respond as commanded.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Chafed, pinched or damaged wiring to the solenoid
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- GM PIP5553 and PIP5724 (Tahoe, Suburban and related V8s) describe a jumper harness chafed or pinched at the X154 connector on the front cover, and PIP5750A points to the engine harness on 2019-2021 Silverado and Sierra 1500. Infiniti replaces the engine room sub-harness on Q50 and Q60.
- What would change this
- Rises if the harness near the front cover or oil pan is rubbed through, or resistance in the circuit is high. Falls if the circuit tests good end to end.
Cause 2: Damaged oil pressure control solenoid connector (2024 Ford Ranger)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford SSM 52717 tells technicians to wiggle-test and inspect solenoid connector C1744 for damage before normal diagnosis.
- What would change this
- Applies to the listed truck; rises if the code sets or clears when the connector is moved.
Cause 3: Failed oil pressure control solenoid
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- The solenoid is the load in this circuit. Mercedes-Benz owners report P06DA with the solenoid or its wiring in the oil sump named by the dealer, but no Mercedes bulletin was found.
- What would change this
- Rises if the solenoid's own resistance is out of specification while the wiring tests good.
Cause 4: Blown shared fuse from a shorted EGR valve (Chevrolet Volt)
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- A Volt dealer repair order quoted in an NHTSA complaint traced P06DA, P06DB and many other codes to a blown fuse 3 caused by a short at the EGR valve, citing GM bulletin 24-NA-080 (not read here).
- What would change this
- Rises if many unrelated circuit codes are stored together and a fuse feeding them is blown.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Check the oil level on the dipstick, then read all stored codes and note any other oil pressure, camshaft or crankshaft codes.
IfMany unrelated circuit codes at once (for example on a Volt)
It meansA shared power feed or fuse may be out.
Points to: Blown shared fuse from a shorted EGR valve (Chevrolet Volt)
IfCamshaft or crankshaft codes or stalling on a GM V8
It meansA damaged jumper harness at the front cover is likely.
Points to: Chafed, pinched or damaged wiring to the solenoid
IfP06DA alone
It meansCheck for a bulletin and test the circuit.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether a bulletin or program covers P06DA on your VIN; GM, Ford and Infiniti have issued some.
IfFord Ranger connector bulletin applies
It meansInspect connector C1744.
Points to: Damaged oil pressure control solenoid connector (2024 Ford Ranger)
IfInfiniti sub-harness bulletin applies
It meansReplace the engine room sub-harness.
Points to: Chafed, pinched or damaged wiring to the solenoid
IfNo bulletin applies
It meansHave the circuit tested.
Step 3: Have a shop check the fuse, measure the solenoid resistance and test the wiring between the engine computer and the solenoid for opens and chafing.
Warning:On many engines the solenoid sits in the oil pan or behind the front cover, so reaching it is a major job. Leave it to a shop.
IfWiring open or high resistance
It meansRepair the harness.
Points to: Chafed, pinched or damaged wiring to the solenoid
IfWiring good, solenoid out of specification
It meansReplace the solenoid (often part of the pump).
Symptoms
- Check engine light with the engine running normally
- Crank but no start or a stall (some GM V8s with a damaged harness) Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Reduced propulsion message and stall (Chevrolet Volt) Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Oil pressure warning or engine knocking Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Check the oil level with the engine off on level ground and top up if it is low.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a bulletin or program for P06DA.
Parts and cost context
- Engine oil pump:The pressure control solenoid is often in the oil pan or part of the pump. On some Mercedes-Benz engines owners report the engine must come out to reach it; labor varies, get a quote. Check the wiring before replacing parts.
Labor varies by vehicle and shop; get a quote before you approve a repair.

P06DA questions
Is P06DA the same as low oil pressure?
No. P06DA is an electrical fault in the circuit that controls oil pressure. It does not by itself mean oil pressure is low, but check the oil level and stop if the oil warning comes on.
