P061B: Engine computer’s internal torque calculation check failed
Internal control module torque calculation performance
Severity: Inspect soon
Mazda bulletins describe P061B with a lack of power, and Ford bulletins list it with an engine buck and low-speed drivability problems, so get it diagnosed soon.
P061B in short
P061B means the engine computer’s internal check of its own torque calculation failed, and you may notice a lack of power. Software that needs an update is the most common fix in Ford and Mazda bulletins, ahead of power-supply problems or a failed computer. Get it checked soon, especially if power drops.
The engine computer continuously works out how much torque the engine is producing and cross-checks that figure internally. Mazda describes P061B as a torque calculation performance problem inside the computer; when the cross-check fails, the code is stored.
On Mazda models the problem was often the check itself: the logic was too sensitive, or the error grew in high heat at high altitude, and the car felt short of power. Mazda’s fix is updated software.
Ford has updates or repairs for P061B on 2005 F-150 5.4L trucks and Crown Victoria Police Interceptors (often with P2106), 2006 E-Series vans and 2023 Super Duty trucks. On 2020–2022 Police Interceptor Utility hybrids, added police equipment powered from the wrong source caused it.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Engine computer software that needs an update
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Mazda (two bulletins) and Ford (2005 F-150, Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, 2023 Super Duty) fix P061B with engine computer software. It is the fix in most bulletins found.
- What would change this
- Rises if a dealer finds an update for your VIN. Falls if the software is current and the code returns.
Cause 2: Power supply problems from added electrical equipment or a weak battery
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- Ford SSM 50354 traces P061B on Police Interceptor Utility hybrids to police equipment wired to the 12-volt batteries or used with the engine off. Outside that fleet it is less documented, so it ranks below software.
- What would change this
- Rises if aftermarket equipment is wired to the battery or the battery tests weak. Falls if there is no added equipment and the battery is good.
Cause 3: Low-speed drivability calibration (2006 E-Series 5.4L)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Ford bulletin 08-4-6 covers a downhill engine buck with speed control on, low-speed drivability concerns and P061B on 2006 E-Series 5.4L vans.
- What would change this
- Rises on that van with those symptoms. Falls on other vehicles.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data, and note whether P2106 or network codes are stored with P061B.
IfP2106 is stored too on a 2005 F-150 or Crown Victoria Police Interceptor
It meansA Ford software bulletin covers this pair.
IfP061B is stored alone or with other codes
It meansCheck for an update for your vehicle.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an engine computer update or bulletin for P061B.
IfAn update applies
It meansReprogram before replacing parts.
IfA 2006 E-Series bulletin applies
It meansFollow the bulletin repair.
Points to: Low-speed drivability calibration (2006 E-Series 5.4L)
IfNo update applies
It meansCheck power supply and added equipment.
Step 3: Test the battery and charging system, and check whether any aftermarket equipment is wired directly to the 12-volt battery.
IfAdded equipment draws from the battery, or the battery is weak
It meansFix the power supply and clear the code.
Points to: Power supply problems from added electrical equipment or a weak battery
IfPower and wiring look correct
It meansHave a shop diagnose the engine computer further using service information.
Symptoms
- Check engine light, sometimes with a lack of power
- Engine bucking with cruise control on downhill, or rough low-speed driving (2006 E-Series)
- Code appears after a cold start and quick shift into gear (2005 F-150 5.4L)
Compare with: Check engine light with loss of power
How to fix
Step 1: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an engine computer update for P061B.
Step 2: If you have added electrical equipment, have a shop check that it is wired to an approved power point and not straight to the battery.

P061B questions
Does P061B mean my engine computer is bad?
Usually not. Ford and Mazda bulletins fix it with software, and on police hybrids with correct wiring of added equipment. Check for updates first.
