P0471: Exhaust pressure sensor reading not making sense
Exhaust pressure sensor A circuit range/performance
Severity: Monitor
Nissan's bulletin for P0471 on the 2016 Titan XD applies only when there are no drivability issues, so the code alone is usually a light-only fault.
It gets more serious if:
- Inspect soon: Have it inspected soon if the engine loses power or goes into limp mode, which PartsAvatar lists as possible results.
P0471 in short
P0471 means the exhaust pressure sensor signal is outside the expected range or does not match how the engine is running. A faulty sensor or a blocked tube to the sensor is the usual cause on turbo and diesel engines. If the truck drives normally you can book a check; get it seen soon if power drops.
Turbocharged and diesel engines use an exhaust pressure sensor to help control the turbo, EGR and filter regeneration.
TaT describes P0471 as a plausibility problem: the reading is electrically valid but does not match what the engine is doing.
PartsAvatar lists a bad sensor, a blocked tube between the manifold and sensor, EGR problems and, rarely, the computer.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Faulty exhaust pressure sensor
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- PartsAvatar lists the sensor first among causes.
- What would change this
- Rises if the sensor reading is out of line with other data. Falls if the reading matches a reference.
Cause 2: Blocked pressure line between manifold and sensor
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- PartsAvatar lists a blockage in the connecting tube.
- What would change this
- Rises if the line is plugged with soot. Falls if it flows freely.
Cause 3: Engine computer software (some vehicles)
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Nissan NTB16-095 covers the 2016 Titan XD with P226C and/or P0471 and no drivability issues; the cached summary was the only part read and the bulletin's status is not verified.
- What would change this
- Rises if a dealer finds an update for the VIN. Falls if the software is current.
Cause 4: EGR system fault
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- PartsAvatar lists an EGR malfunction as a cause.
- What would change this
- Rises if EGR codes are also stored. Falls if EGR works.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all codes, especially boost, EGR and exhaust pressure codes.
IfBoost or EGR codes also stored
It meansWork those with the pressure sensor.
IfOnly P0471
It meansCheck for a bulletin and test the sensor.
Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a software update for P0471, then have the sensor and its tube checked.
Warning:The sensor and tube are on the hot exhaust side; let a shop do the checks.
IfAn update applies
It meansUpdate first.
IfThe tube is clogged
It meansClean or replace the line.
Points to: Blocked pressure line between manifold and sensor
IfThe sensor reads wrong
It meansReplace the sensor.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Reduced engine power Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
How to fix
Step 1: Ask a dealer whether an engine software update is open for P0471 on your vehicle.
