P023F: Fuel pump control circuit fault
Fuel pump control circuit / secondary circuit
Severity: Inspect soon
A fuel pump circuit fault can stop the pump working, leading to stalling or a no-start, which GM's bulletin lists for related vehicles.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Treat it as urgent if the engine stalls while driving or the car will not restart, because the fuel pump may have lost power.
P023F in short
P023F points to a fault in the fuel pump control circuit, where the fuel pump control module sees abnormal voltage. Wiring, the control module or the pump assembly can cause it. Stalling or a no-start is possible, so get it checked soon and do not rely on the car if it stalls.
Many newer cars drive the fuel pump through a separate fuel pump control module. The module watches the voltage on the pump circuit.
In GM service information (read via Saab), the code sets while ignition voltage is between 9 and 18 V and the circuit voltage is below 11 V or above 18 V.
GM's procedure tests the control circuit with a test lamp, checks for shorts to voltage or ground and then replaces the module or the tank assembly if circuits test normal.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Wiring or connector fault on the pump circuit
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- Saab/GM procedure starts with testing the circuit for shorts or opens.
- What would change this
- Rises if a test lamp does not behave on the control circuit. Falls if circuits test normal.
Cause 2: Fuel pump control module fault
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- GM PIP5964C (cached summary) tells technicians to replace the fuel pump driver control module on affected 2021-2023 vehicles with stalling and no-start; the summary does not name P023F in the part read.
- What would change this
- Rises if circuits test normal and the module is not driving the pump. Falls if the module drives correctly.
Cause 3: Fuel pump or tank assembly fault
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- The GM procedure replaces the tank assembly if circuits and the module test normal.
- What would change this
- Rises after wiring and module are cleared.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all codes and note any no-start, stalling or fuel-pump related codes.
IfStalling or no-start history with the code
It meansHave the circuit tested soon.
IfCode only, car runs normally
It meansHave the circuit tested at the next service.
Step 2: Have a shop test the pump control circuit for opens, shorts and the module output.
Warning:The pump is inside the fuel tank and the circuits are live; the tank must not be opened by a non-professional.
IfA circuit fault is found
It meansRepair the wiring or connector.
IfCircuits test normal but the module does not drive the pump
It meansModule fault.
IfModule and circuits good
It meansPump assembly.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Stalling, no-start or loss of power Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

P023F questions
Can I drive with P023F?
It is risky if the engine has stalled or hesitated, because the pump circuit may have lost power. Have it checked soon.
