P0196: Engine oil temperature reading does not make sense

Engine oil temperature sensor range/performance

P0196 in short

P0196 means the oil temperature sensor reading does not fit what the engine is doing. A failed sensor, its wiring, or engine computer software is the usual cause. Some Nissan Rogues also reported power loss with it. Get it checked soon, and stop driving if the car goes into limp mode.

The engine computer compares the oil temperature signal with other temperatures, such as coolant, and with how long the engine has run. P0196 sets when the oil reading is electrically valid but does not fit, for example stuck at one value or lagging badly.

A tired sensor, a poor connector or a software calibration problem can do this. Land Rover found that some 2014 Evoques set P0196 because of software rather than a bad sensor.

On the 2021 to 2025 Nissan Rogue with the KR15DDT engine, Nissan has a bulletin for P0196 that says P0012 may be stored with it and to disregard P0012. Owners also report limp mode, so treat a stored P0196 on that engine as worth a prompt inspection.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Oil temperature sensor or its wiring

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
The sensor reading is checked against other temperatures, so a drifting or stuck sensor or a poor connector is the direct explanation.
    What would change this
Rises if the reading is stuck or does not warm with the engine. Falls if it tracks coolant temperature normally.
  2. Cause 2: Engine computer software that falsely sets the code (some models)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Land Rover says some 2014 Evoque cars set P0196 from PCM software, not a failed sensor. Only the NHTSA summary was read.
    What would change this
Rises if the sensor tests fine and a dealer finds a newer calibration for your VIN. Falls if the software is current.
How to test the engine control module (ecm / pcm)
  3. Cause 3: Nissan KR15DDT engine pattern with P0012 (Rogue)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Nissan NTB25-007 gives a service procedure for P0196 on the Rogue and says P0012 may be stored with it. Owners report limp mode. Only the NHTSA summary was read, and the recall text was not read, so no cause is stated here.
    What would change this
Rises if you own a 2021 to 2025 Rogue and a dealer finds the bulletin applies. Falls on other vehicles.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data, and note whether P0012 or an oil pressure warning came with P0196.

    Low risk

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open engine computer calibration for P0196.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: Compare the oil temperature live data with coolant temperature on a cold start and as the engine warms, and inspect the sensor connector.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Oil temperature reading that does not change, if your car displays it
  • Limp mode or power reduced warning Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Oil pressure warning or new engine noise Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Check the oil level with the engine off and level, and top up if low.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has an open software update or bulletin for P0196.

P0196 questions

Can I keep driving with P0196?

If the car drives normally you can usually make a short trip, but get it checked soon. Stop if it goes into limp mode, the oil pressure light comes on, or the engine makes a new noise.

Does P0196 mean the engine oil is overheating?

Not necessarily. The code says the oil temperature signal does not fit expected behavior, which is often a sensor or software problem.
