P0176: Fuel composition sensor circuit fault

Fuel composition (ethanol) sensor circuit malfunction

Severity: Severity not verified — if the car runs badly, have it inspected

TroubleCodes.net says some vehicles show no symptoms on standard gasoline while others run rough or stall on higher ethanol blends, and no source rates it for driving.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Get it inspected soon if the engine stalls, hesitates badly or will not start. Ford bulletins for flex fuel vehicles list hard or no start and rough idle with this code.

P0176 in short

P0176 means the computer sees a fault in the circuit of the fuel composition sensor, the part that tells it how much ethanol is in the fuel. A faulty sensor, wiring or contaminated fuel are the usual causes. On regular gasoline you may notice little, but flex fuel vehicles can start hard or idle rough.

Flex fuel vehicles use a fuel composition sensor to measure the ethanol content so the computer can set fuel and timing. P0176 is the circuit fault for that sensor: wiring, the sensor, or less often the computer.

TroubleCodes.net says the sensor signal is a frequency that rises with ethanol content, roughly 40 to 160 Hz, and that fuel with unusual oxygen content or water in the connector can upset it. A Ford bulletin is cited for water in the connector sub-harness.

Ford has several bulletins for 1996-1999 flex fuel Taurus and Ranger models that list hard or no start, rough idle and driveability complaints with or without P0176.

Most likely causes

These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.

  1. Cause 1: Faulty fuel composition sensor

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
The code names this sensor circuit and TroubleCodes.net lists a faulty sensor; its tests say a good supply with a wrong signal points to the sensor.
    What would change this
Rises if power and ground are good but the signal frequency is wrong. Falls if the frequency is plausible for the fuel in the tank.
  2. Cause 2: Wiring problem or water or corrosion in the connector

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net lists circuit problems and water intrusion in the connector sub-harness, noting a Ford bulletin.
    What would change this
Rises if the connector is wet or corroded or a circuit check shows a break. Falls if the connector is clean and the circuit checks out.
  3. Cause 3: Contaminated fuel or an unusual blend

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net lists contaminated fuel with excess oxygen content, and says symptoms are most likely with blends other than E10. It is a less direct cause.
    What would change this
Rises if the code began after a fill-up or the fuel looks wrong. Falls if the code came with no change in fuel.
  4. Cause 4: Engine computer fault

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
TroubleCodes.net marks the computer as an uncommon cause, to be considered only after the sensor and circuit check out.
    What would change this
Rises only if power, ground and signal are all good at the computer. Falls with any wiring or sensor fault found.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all stored codes and freeze frame, note what fuel was last added, and check whether the car is a flex fuel model.

    Low riskTool: OBD-II scan tool

  2. Step 2: With the key off, look at the fuel composition sensor connector and its wiring for water, corrosion or damage.

    Low risk

  3. Step 3: With key on, engine off, measure power, ground and the signal frequency at the sensor connector, and compare with the maker specification.

Best left to a shopTool: multimeter with frequency, wiring diagram

Warning:Probing connectors near fuel lines risks a short or a spark near fuel. Use the proper adapters and disconnect the battery when the procedure says to; let a shop do it.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough idle or poor performance on higher ethanol blends
  • Hard start on some flex fuel vehicles
  • Stalling Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • No noticeable change on regular gasoline

How to fix

  1. Step 1: With the key off, look at the sensor connector for water or corrosion and make sure it is fully seated.
