P0131: The engine computer sees a voltage that is too low on the upstream oxygen sensor circuit for bank 1
Upstream O2 sensor circuit low voltage, bank 1
Severity: Monitor
Most owners notice only the check engine light, and the car usually drives normally for a while. Without accurate feedback the computer can't fine-tune fuel, so fuel economy and emissions suffer; book a diagnosis rather than leaving it.
It gets more serious if:
- Inspect soon: Get it inspected soon if the engine runs poorly, bucks or hesitates; Honda's bulletin pairs P0131 with poor engine performance, and a dealer replaced a failed sensor on a car that bucked and stalled.
- Stop: Stop if the check engine light starts flashing: that means an active misfire hot enough to damage the catalytic converter. Pull over where nothing flammable is under the car and let it cool.
P0131 in short
P0131 means the voltage from the bank 1 upstream oxygen sensor is lower than it should be. A failed sensor, a wire shorted to ground, water in the connector or an exhaust leak are common causes. Most cars drive normally at first; get it checked soon, sooner if the engine runs poorly.
The upstream oxygen sensor sits before the catalytic converter on bank 1, the side with cylinder 1. A narrowband sensor normally swings between 0.2 V or less when lean and about 0.9 V when rich.
P0131 sets when the signal stays too low for too long. Saab's service information, for example, sets it when the sensor leads look shorted to ground for more than 25 seconds. A genuinely lean engine can also hold the signal low, and GM calls P0131 an O2 lean-limit code on the Aveo.
Because the computer loses its main fuel feedback, it may fall back to a default mixture, which can cost fuel economy and, if ignored, contribute to catalytic converter problems.
Most likely causes
Cause 1: Failed upstream oxygen sensor
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net lists sensor failure first, and a GM dealer replaced a failed bank 1 sensor for P0131.
- What would change this
- Likelier if the signal stays low even when the engine is made rich.
Cause 2: Sensor wire shorted to ground or chafed
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- Saab's test looks for the signal shorted to ground, and GM lists P0131 among codes from a harness issue on 2013-2015 Traverse, Acadia and Enclave.
- What would change this
- Likelier if the harness touches the exhaust or other sensor codes are also stored.
Cause 3: Water or corrosion in the connector
Supported by vehicle data- Why it ranks here
- TroubleCodes.net lists water and corrosion, and Ford's Transit bulletin lists P0131 among codes from water entry.
- What would change this
- Likelier after driving through deep water or if the connector shows green corrosion.
Cause 4: Exhaust leak or a real lean condition
Possible — needs testing- Why it ranks here
- An exhaust leak ahead of the sensor pulls in air, and GM treats P0131 as a lean-limit code on the Aveo.
- What would change this
- Likelier if P0171 is also stored or you hear an exhaust leak near the manifold.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: Read all codes and freeze-frame data, and watch the bank 1 upstream sensor voltage at idle and 2,500 rpm
IfVoltage stuck near 0 V
It meansSuspect a short to ground or a dead sensor.
IfVoltage switches but runs low, with P0171
It meansThe engine may be lean; check for leaks.
IfOther sensor or heater codes also stored
It meansSuspect shared wiring.
Step 2: With the engine cool, inspect the sensor harness for melted or chafed insulation and the connector for water or corrosion
Warning:Exhaust parts get hot enough to burn; let the engine cool fully before touching sensors or pipes.
IfDamaged wire or corroded connector
It meansRepair the wiring or connector.
IfWiring looks fine
It meansMeasure the circuit.
Step 3: Unplug the sensor and test the signal wire for continuity (under 1 ohm) and short to ground (over 10 kohm), following the service manual
Warning:Exhaust parts get hot enough to burn; let the engine cool fully before touching sensors or pipes.
IfSignal wire shorted to ground
It meansRepair the wiring.
IfCircuit good
It meansReplace the sensor.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Usually no change in how the car drives
- Poorer fuel economy
- Hesitation, bucking or poor running Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Flashing check engine light Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
Compare with: Rough idle with the check engine light on
How to fix
Step 1: Look under the car for a sensor wire touching the exhaust or a loose, wet connector, and have damaged wiring repaired.
Step 2: Ask a dealer to check your VIN for bulletins; Honda, GM and Ford have published ones that name P0131.
Parts and cost context
- Oxygen (O2) sensor:Upstream sensors are commonly replaced, but check the wiring first; a short to ground will make a new sensor read the same. Labour varies; get a quote.
