P0126: Engine not reaching a steady operating temperature

Insufficient coolant temperature for stable operation (thermostat stuck open)

Severity: Monitor

The engine runs cooler than the computer expects, which hurts fuel economy, heat and emissions but does not cause immediate danger. Mazda describes cases as a stuck-open reading with longer warm-up and poor heater performance.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Inspect soon if the temperature gauge swings, the car has no heat in cold weather, or the temperature rises above normal.

P0126 in short

P0126 means the engine is not warming to a steady operating temperature fast enough. A thermostat stuck open is the usual cause; a coolant temperature sensor or low coolant can do it too. It is usually safe to drive short term, but it hurts fuel economy, heat and emissions, so get it checked.

The computer expects the coolant to reach normal temperature within a set time after a start. If it stays cool, or wanders, the computer sets P0126 and runs a rougher fuel and ignition plan that raises emissions.

A thermostat stuck open is the common cause. A coolant temperature sensor or wiring fault, low coolant, a cooling fan running too much and the wrong coolant can also do it.

Mazda has two groups of bulletins. In 2013 to 2014 it found the computer software could falsely detect a stuck-open thermostat on cold highway starts. In 2018 to 2020 models it describes real symptoms such as longer warm-up, a fluctuating gauge and poor heater performance.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Thermostat stuck open

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
CarParts.com lists the thermostat first, and Mazda describes P0126 as thermostat stuck open with warm-up and heater symptoms.
    What would change this
Rises if the engine warms slowly, the heater is weak and the upper hose stays cool. Falls if the engine warms normally.
    How to test the thermostat
  2. Cause 2: Coolant temperature sensor or wiring

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
CarParts.com lists the coolant temperature sensor and its wiring.
    What would change this
Rises if live temperature disagrees with a thermometer reading. Falls if the reading is accurate.
How to test the engine coolant temperature (ect) sensor
  3. Cause 3: Software falsely flagging a stuck-open thermostat (some Mazdas)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Mazda 01-010-13-2775 says the thermostat works normally but the code is set by inappropriate PCM software on 2013 CX-5 and 2014 Mazda6 in cold, highway conditions. Only the NHTSA summary was read.
    What would change this
Rises if the engine warms normally and the code set on a cold highway start. Falls if the engine really runs cool.
How to test the engine control module (ecm / pcm)
  4. Cause 4: Low or wrong coolant, or a fan running too much

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
CarParts.com lists low coolant, faulty cooling fans and the wrong coolant as additional causes.
    What would change this
Rises if the coolant is low or the fan runs constantly. Falls otherwise.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a bulletin for P0126. Mazda has several.

    Low risk

  2. Step 2: With a scan tool, watch coolant temperature on a cold start for 10 to 15 minutes, and note whether the heater blows warm.

Low riskTool: scan tool with live data

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Longer warm-up or weak heater
  • Temperature gauge fluctuating or low
  • Slightly higher fuel use

How to fix

  1. Step 1: With the engine fully cool, check the coolant level in the reservoir.

Warning:Never open the cap on a hot cooling system.

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer whether your VIN has a bulletin for P0126.

P0126 questions

Is it safe to drive with P0126?

Usually yes for short trips, since the engine is running cool rather than hot. It wastes fuel and raises emissions, so get it checked, and watch for a gauge that swings high.

Should I just replace the thermostat?

Often, but on some Mazdas a software update fixes a false code. Ask about bulletins and watch the warm-up before buying parts.
