P0102: The airflow sensor's signal is lower than the engine computer will accept
MAF sensor circuit low
Severity: Inspect soon
Saab's service information lists rough idling, stalling and poor driving as symptoms of this airflow fault, and an engine that stalls in traffic is a hazard, so have it checked soon rather than waiting.
It gets more serious if:
- Stop: Stop if the check engine light starts flashing: that means an active misfire hot enough to damage the catalytic converter. Pull over where nothing flammable is under the car and let it cool.
P0102 in short
P0102 means the engine computer sees an airflow (MAF) sensor signal that is too low to be believable, usually an electrical fault. Check for a loose or corroded connector, damaged wiring or missing power before replacing the sensor. The engine may idle roughly or stall, so get it checked soon.
The MAF sensor reports how much air enters the engine as an electrical signal. P0102 sets when that signal stays below the lowest value a running engine could produce; on the 2008 Saab 9-3, for example, below about 10.3 grams per second for four seconds.
Because the reading is implausibly low rather than just a little off, the cause is usually electrical: a connector that has worked loose or corroded, a damaged wire, or a missing power supply or ground. The sensor itself is the last thing to condemn.
Without a believable airflow figure the computer can't meter fuel accurately, so the engine may idle roughly, hesitate or stall. Fixing P0102 also lets the computer run checks such as the P0101 airflow plausibility test properly again.
Most likely causes
These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.
Cause 1: Unplugged, loose or corroded MAF connector
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- A connector that has worked loose or corroded cuts the signal, and it is the quickest thing to check. Saab's procedure points to connector contact when the reading comes and goes.
- What would change this
- A loose, green or bent-pin connector, or a code that appears when the harness is wiggled, confirms it.
Cause 2: Damaged wiring between the sensor and the engine computer
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- An open or grounded signal wire reads as almost no airflow. Saab's service information treats this code as an electrical fault in the wiring or the component.
- What would change this
- A wire that fails a continuity or wiggle test confirms it; sound wiring moves power supply and the sensor up.
Cause 3: No power or ground at the sensor (fuse, relay or circuit)
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- The MAF needs supply voltage and a good ground to produce a signal. Saab's procedure checks the sensor's power supply.
- What would change this
- Missing supply voltage or a poor ground at the connector confirms it.
Cause 4: Failed MAF sensor
Common general cause- Why it ranks here
- With wiring, power and ground proven good, the sensor itself is producing too low a signal.
- What would change this
- A signal that stays low with good power, ground and wiring confirms it.
What to test first
Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.
Step 1: With a scan tool, read the MAF signal with the engine running and compare it with the specification for your engine (Saab's 9-2X procedure gives roughly 0.2 to 4.7 volts as normal)
Warning:Keep hands, hair and loose clothing clear of the belts and fan while the engine runs, and never run the engine in a closed garage.
IfThe signal is low or absent
It meansThere is a hard fault; check power and ground next.
IfThe signal is normal right now
It meansThe fault is intermittent; suspect the connector or harness.
Step 2: With the engine idling and the MAF reading displayed, gently wiggle the connector and harness and inspect the pins
Warning:Keep hands, hair and loose clothing clear of the belts and fan while the engine runs, and never run the engine in a closed garage.
IfThe reading drops out or the pins are loose or corroded
It meansA connector problem.
IfThe reading stays steady
It meansCheck the wiring more thoroughly.
Step 3: Check supply voltage and ground at the MAF connector, then continuity of the signal wire to the engine computer
Warning:Back-probe connectors gently and never pierce wire insulation; follow the wiring diagram for your engine.
IfNo supply voltage or a poor ground
It meansTrace the fuse, relay or circuit feeding the sensor.
Points to: No power or ground at the sensor (fuse, relay or circuit)
IfThe signal wire is open or shorted to ground
It meansRepair the wiring.
Points to: Damaged wiring between the sensor and the engine computer
IfPower, ground and wiring are good but the signal stays low
It meansThe sensor has failed.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Rough idle, hesitation or poor acceleration Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Engine stalls Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
- Check engine light flashing, or the engine shakes and stumbles under load Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
Compare with: Rough idle with the check engine light on, Check engine light with loss of power
How to fix
Step 1: With the engine off, check that the MAF connector is fully latched and look for green corrosion or bent pins.
Step 2: Follow the MAF wiring along the intake for chafing, melted insulation or rodent damage.
Parts and cost context
- Mass airflow (MAF) sensor:Prove power, ground and wiring before buying a sensor; a connector or wire repair is often enough.

P0102 questions
Can I drive with P0102?
Possibly for a short distance, but without a good airflow signal the engine may idle roughly or stall. Get it checked soon, and stop if it stalls or the light flashes.
Will cleaning the MAF sensor fix P0102?
Unlikely. P0102 means the signal is implausibly low, which usually points to the connector, wiring or power supply rather than a dirty element.
Is it the sensor or the wiring?
Check the wiring first. If the reading drops out when you wiggle the harness, or the sensor has no power or ground, the sensor is probably fine.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with this code?
Not while the check engine light is on; under the federal OBD inspection procedure a lit light with stored codes is a failure. After the repair the light normally goes out after three good drives, and readiness monitors must complete before a retest.
