P00FF in short

P00FF means the body control module asked the dashboard to turn on the check engine light. It is a flag rather than a fault in a part. On recent GM trucks and SUVs it has been tied to a serial data authentication fault (U1962) or a BCM software update; read every stored code to find the actual problem.

The engine computer normally controls the check engine light. On some vehicles the body control module (BCM) can also request it, and P00FF records that the BCM did.

Because the code only says who asked for the light, the cause is whatever made the BCM ask. In a dealer scan from a 2022 Suburban it was listed with several lost-communication codes after the telematics module failed. On 2025 GM full-size SUVs, GM links it with U1962 (unable to authenticate serial data message) and tells dealers to clear codes, run a serial data authentication configuration, or update BCM calibrations.

A 2020 Cadillac CT5 bulletin covers P00FF together with B2B05 and B2B06. The NHTSA summaries do not describe the repair for it.
