P0090: Fuel pressure regulator control circuit fault

Fuel pressure regulator 1 control circuit

P0090 in short

P0090 means the computer sees an electrical fault in the control circuit of the fuel pressure regulator, the actuator that sets fuel pressure. Wiring, connectors or the regulator itself are the usual causes. Some vehicles reduce engine power when it is active, so get it checked soon.

A fuel pressure regulator or pump actuator controls how much fuel pressure the engine gets. The computer drives it through its own circuit.

TaT says the code means an electrical fault in the wiring, connector or driver of that circuit.

On the Saab/GM service procedure, the code sets after one second when actuator voltage reads 1 to 4.5 V while commanded off, and the display shows Reduced Engine Power.

Most likely causes

These are general causes for this code across vehicles. None is specific to one make or model.

  1. Cause 1: Fuel pressure regulator or pump actuator fault

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
The Saab procedure has you test the actuator and its circuits; TaT names the driver and wiring.
    What would change this
Rises if the actuator resistance is out of range. Falls if it reads normal.
  2. Cause 2: Wiring or connector open or short

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
The Saab procedure checks for shorts to ground, opens, and shorts to voltage; TaT names wiring and connector.
    What would change this
Rises if continuity or voltage checks fail. Falls if the circuit tests good.
  3. Cause 3: Engine computer driver

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
TaT names the driver; it is only suspect after wiring and actuator.
    What would change this
Rises if wiring and actuator test good. Falls if either fails.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes and freeze-frame data and note fuel pressure readings.

    • IfFuel pressure is wrong or other fuel codes present

      It meansHave the circuit tested.

      Go to step 2

    • IfPressure is normal

      It meansHave the circuit tested.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Have a shop check the actuator circuit voltage, continuity and resistance and fuel rail pressure at idle.

Best left to a shopTool: multimeter

Warning:High pressure fuel systems can spray fuel under pressure. Let a shop do it.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Reduced Engine Power message Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Stalling or poor performance Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

Chevrolet bulletin PIP6061 names P0090. Preliminary information: a poor connection at the high pressure fuel pump may set P0089, P0090, P00C6, P163A and/or P228C. Inspect and wiggle the harness and repair the connector or terminals as needed. Also listed for Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia. Whether it is still current is not verified.

P0090 questions

Can I drive with P0090?

Get it checked soon. The GM procedure shows Reduced Engine Power while it is active, and stalling is possible, so do not drive on in traffic with low power.
