P0089: Fuel pressure regulator not holding the pressure the computer asks for

Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Performance

P0089 in short

P0089 means fuel rail pressure is not following the pressure the engine computer is asking the regulator for. On direct-injection engines this usually points to the high-pressure fuel pump, its control valve or wiring, or a pressure sensor or software fault. Get it diagnosed soon, and stop driving if the engine stalls or loses power.

The engine computer sets a target fuel pressure and controls a regulator to hold it, while the rail pressure sensor reports what is actually there. P0089 sets when the two disagree for too long, even though the electrical signals are in range.

On most modern direct-injection petrol engines the regulator is a solenoid valve on the engine-driven high-pressure pump. GM-based service information for the 3.0L and 3.6L engines (as used in the Saab 9-4X) says the code sets when the pump's control goes outside its range for more than 10 seconds, and lists leaks, pump defects, injectors, camshaft problems and circuit resistance as things to check.

Bulletins show the fix is often not the pump. GM has replaced the rail pressure sensor, the fuel rail, the pump connector or the engine computer software; Mazda and Land Rover have fixed false codes with software or a relief valve seal in the tank pump. GM also warns not to replace parts for a code that is only in history.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: High-pressure fuel pump, its control valve or its connector

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
GM-based service information (Saab 9-4X 3.0L/3.6L) describes the pump's solenoid valve as what regulates rail pressure, and lists pump defects and circuit resistance as diagnostic aids. GM also traced P0089 to the pump connector on 2024–2025 Traverse, Acadia and Enclave.
    What would change this
Rises if actual pressure lags desired when commanded, or the code returns when the pump harness is moved. Falls if pressure tracks desired closely.
How to test the fuel pump
  2. Cause 2: Fuel rail pressure sensor reading wrong

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
On 2014–2016 GM trucks, SUVs and Corvette, GM says to replace the rail pressure sensor if published diagnostics do not find the fault. KBB also lists the sensor.
    What would change this
Rises if the sensor reading does not match a known pressure or jumps around. Falls if it reads sensibly and tracks commands.
How to test the fuel rail pressure sensor
  3. Cause 3: Engine computer software (some GM and Mazda models)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM reprograms the engine computer on 2023 Equinox and Terrain, and Mazda fixed a false P0089 on the 2021 Mazda2 with new software.
    What would change this
Rises if the dealer finds a newer calibration for the VIN. Falls if it is current.
  4. Cause 4: Fuel rail fault (2024 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
GM tells technicians to replace the fuel rail, not the injection pump, for P0089 and P2293 on these trucks.
    What would change this
Rises on a 2024 Silverado or Sierra 1500 with P2293 also stored. Falls on other models.
  5. Cause 5: Low-pressure supply from the in-tank fuel pump

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
The GM-based test (Saab 9-4X) only runs when the low-pressure side is above 275 kPa, and Land Rover traced P0089 on the 2012–2013 Evoque and LR2 to a relief valve seal in the in-tank pump. It ranks below the engine-side causes.
    What would change this
Rises if the low-side pressure reading is low or unsteady. Falls if it holds specification.
How to test the fuel pump
  6. Cause 6: Wrong intake camshaft or cam sprocket fitted after engine work

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
GM traced P0089 with P228D on 2010–2011 Equinox, Terrain, LaCrosse and Regal to an incorrect intake camshaft or sprocket, and lists camshaft problems as a diagnostic aid. It only applies after engine work.
    What would change this
Rises if the code appeared right after timing or camshaft work. Falls if the engine has not been apart.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes and freeze-frame data. Note whether P0089 is active or only in history, and whether P228C, P228D, P2293, P0087, P0088 or P0191 are stored too.

    Low riskTool: OBD-II scan tool

    • IfP0089 is only in history and the car drives normally

It meansGM warns not to replace fuel parts unless the code is active and diagnostics are complete. Check bulletins and recheck later.

      Go to step 2

    • IfP0089 is active

      It meansCheck bulletins before testing.

      Go to step 2

  2. Step 2: Ask a dealer to check the VIN for engine computer updates and fuel system bulletins.

Low riskTool: VIN lookup at a dealer

  3. Step 3: With a scan tool, compare actual and desired fuel rail pressure at idle and while a helper raises engine speed. On the GM 3.0L/3.6L engines in Saab's service information, idle pressure should be about 1.9–5.0 MPa and follow desired pressure closely.

Use cautionTool: scan tool with live data

Warning:Run the engine outdoors and keep clear of belts and the fan. Never loosen a fuel fitting: the high-pressure side can hold pressure after shutdown and a fuel spray can cause injury or fire.

  4. Step 4: Have a shop inspect the high-pressure pump connector and terminals, move the harness with the engine running to see if the code returns, and check the low-side pressure.

Best left to a shopTool: scan tool, fuel pressure gauge

Warning:Run the engine outdoors and keep clear of belts and the fan. Never loosen a fuel fitting: the high-pressure side can hold pressure after shutdown and a fuel spray can cause injury or fire.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Worse fuel economy
  • Hesitation or poor acceleration Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
  • Engine stalls or loses power Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.

How to fix

  1. Step 1: Ask a dealer to check the VIN for software updates and fuel system bulletins before buying parts. Several P0089 fixes are a reprogram or a specific part.

  2. Step 2: If the code is only in history and the car drives normally, clear it and see if it returns before replacing anything.

Parts and cost context

  • Fuel pump:The high-pressure pump is often blamed, but GM bulletins also replace the sensor, rail or connector instead. Confirm with pressure tests first. Labour varies; get a quote.

P0089 questions

Is it safe to drive with P0089?

Not for long. KBB advises against it because the engine can hesitate or stall. Get it diagnosed soon, and stop if it stalls or loses power.

Does P0089 always mean a bad high-pressure fuel pump?

No. GM bulletins have replaced the rail pressure sensor, the fuel rail, the pump connector or the computer software instead. Test before buying a pump.
