P0030: Oxygen sensor heater circuit fault on bank 1 sensor 1

HO2S heater control circuit (bank 1 sensor 1)

Severity: Monitor

A heater circuit fault keeps the upstream oxygen sensor from warming up quickly, which mostly raises emissions and fuel use. KBB calls it not immediately critical but says it needs prompt attention.

It gets more serious if:

  • Inspect soon: Inspect soon if the engine runs rough, loses power or the check engine light flashes.

P0030 in short

P0030 means the heater circuit of the upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 has a fault. Likely causes are a failed sensor heater, damaged wiring, a blown fuse or a power or ground problem. The car usually runs, but fuel economy and emissions suffer. Get it checked soon.

The upstream oxygen sensor has a heater so it works soon after start-up. If the computer finds the heater circuit open, shorted or out of range, it sets P0030.

KBB lists a failed heating element, wiring damage, power or ground problems, a blown fuse, battery problems and a failed computer driver. Symptoms are a check engine light, slow sensor response at start and worse fuel economy.

Ford has a 2013 bulletin where P0030 is stored with P0132, P0135, P2243 and P2251 on the Escape, Fusion and MKZ, and a 2012 Expedition and Navigator bulletin where it can appear with P0135 and P0155.

Most likely causes

  1. Cause 1: Failed sensor heater element

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
KBB lists a failed heating element first.
    What would change this
Rises if the heater resistance is out of specification. Falls if it is in range.
How to test the oxygen (o2) sensor
  2. Cause 2: Wiring, fuse or power or ground fault

    Common general cause
    Why it ranks here
KBB lists wiring damage, blown fuses and power or ground problems.
    What would change this
Rises if the heater has no supply or ground at the connector or a fuse is blown. Falls if both are present.
How to test the underhood fuse block (engine compartment fuse box)
  3. Cause 3: Ford powertrain computer related fault (some models)

    Supported by vehicle data
    Why it ranks here
Ford's 2013 Escape, Fusion and MKZ bulletin stores P0030 with several oxygen sensor codes, so the computer or a shared circuit may be at fault.
    What would change this
Rises if several heater codes are stored on those models. Falls if only P0030 is stored.
  4. Cause 4: Engine computer heater driver

    Possible — needs testing
    Why it ranks here
KBB lists a failed computer driver as less likely.
    What would change this
Rises only after the sensor and wiring test good.

What to test first

Start at step 1. Each result tells you what it means and where to go next.

  1. Step 1: Read all codes and note any other oxygen sensor heater codes.

    • IfSeveral heater codes (such as P0135 or P0155) are stored

It meansCheck the shared fuse or supply first.

      Go to step 2

    • IfP0030 is alone

      It meansTest the sensor heater.

      Go to step 3

  2. Step 2: Check the heater fuse and the supply and ground at the sensor connector.

    Use cautionTool: multimeter

Warning:Work with the engine off and cool; exhaust parts are hot.

  3. Step 3: Measure the sensor heater resistance against the service manual.

    Use cautionTool: multimeter

Warning:Work only on a cool exhaust and use proper tools.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Slower oxygen sensor response at start-up
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Rough running or power loss Gets more serious: stop and have it checked.
